OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I have a problem with a neighbor I am unsure how to handle, maybe you guys will have some advice. In our area chicken ownership is pretty underground and at the whim of the zoning officer. He thinks they are exotic animals. Several people in our neighborhood have a few chickens. My next door neighbor has maybe six or eight at a time. However the care they provide them is abysmal. They have a couple cat litter boxes with straw for nest boxes and that is the only "indoors" they have. Then they are poorly fenced into a corner of the yard that is too small but doesn't really matter because the escape all the time. The real problem is that the lack of security (and the fact that they leave dog food out) has created a real predator problem. My girls are locked up at night, but I have found several of their hens eviscerated in my yard. They seem totally unfazed. Just go to the auction and buy some more. Mostly the carnage is starting to wear on me but I don't know how to kindly get this point across.

Sounds like a case of neglect, especially if they have no real shelter. If you want to get really involved: My sister once found a Doberman in the road on her way down here to visit. It was so thin she couldn't believe it could still walk, and it had a broken leg that had healed into an unnatural position. She knocked on the owners door and they brought it in and acted like nothing was wrong. So she called the SPCA of that area. They said they'd "check into it" (meaning they would do nothing). So she called the SPCA of Columbus (ohiospca.org, I believe). They were genuinely concerned and said although it was outside of their county/area, if the rightful county did nothing about it, they would get involved legally and take care of it. Shew. Short story: you could try contacting the SPCA, even anonymously I think, to see if they'll do anything about it. I think that particular one in Columbus had a farm rescue so they might be more concerned about the plights of chickens. Might be worth a shot. They might do nothing, but at least you'd have tried, for their poor chickens' sakes. :idunno

Choc silkie number one is out. Too bad it looks like its black :(but it is out finally. 2 more are SLOWLY unzipping. Not very much progress what so ever but there is progress. Only my silkies are pipping, none of the showgirls yet. But it is 2 days early.

I thought she was breeding chocolate on chocolate in the Silkies? Shouldn't produce black. I may remember her colors wrong though.

It was a chocolate split over chocolate hens. So basically 25% will be split males, 25% black females, and 50% chocolate. So the females will not be helpful in breeding in the future but the males are all split which breed to the chocolate female again would produce the same result. So, if you see another auction for them in the future let me know. Looks like I will be trying to get a couple of them so that I can get some of both to breed together to reach my goal.

And yey for the ameracuna!!!

If you have any black silkie eggs available let me know too. It won't be until October when I need some. Lol I'm going silkie crazy.

Um, has anyone seen the pretty chocolate cuckoo Orpington? I found some eggs on Craigslist that I am really tempted on getting. Would you get that by breeding a chocolate to a cuckoo? Tat would also be an interesting color on a silkie.
