OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

im with you on how to set the barter amounts. for goods versus goods, you could go with a mutually decided price.

as far as labor versus goods, i guess it would be up to the person doing the labor; and what the job entails. for instance, if one of you needed help building a chicken coop that i could help you do and finish in a day - i would probably barter for a lot less (per hour) than if i was helping you build a barn that could take a month.

i have not bought firewood for anything more than a campfire when we were on vacation. i know it gets expensive fast to cut it, split it, haul it, and pay labor. i cant remember the measurements of ricks and cords either. i remember a rick is 4 feet high, and i think its 18 inches deep, and i question 8 feet long. hopefully one of you can shed some light on this for me, also how much does a cord go for.

ok, a quick funny story:
my oldest daughter just informed me that she had bought a pumpkin pie. she said it didnt taste right, but i could have some. DW chimed in with "it tastes bad because she didnt let it thaw." it took me about 2 seconds to realize they had bought a frozen pie, and started eating it without cooking it.

I'm reminded how useless I am. LOL. Can't kill critters or raise them for kill, no building or carpentry skills, don't use firewood for anything, can't grow a single living plant, can't cook or bake let alone canning, can't sew and my crochet skills are weak, have one goat and wouldn't have a clue what to do with milk, have no skills besides piano and unless anyone needs serenaded to sleep, that won't do anyone good. :gig If everything goes primitive again, I'll be the first to die. :lau I'll get to work on facilities big enough for layers.. lol.

I did get my first egg today from a raised bird (not bought mature)! My EE that's now 8 months old or so finally gave me a pretty blue egg today. :weee

I love all these ideas! It would be awesome to be able to use everyone's strengths to help a group. I wish more people did things like this. I always start extra garden crops and donate to those I know will use them. A friend of mine just lost her husband and is on her own the first time. I gave her a full fall garden and showed her how to plant, tend, and harvest. Will help her store it when it comes as well. She and her little girl are so excited about learning more, and I am going to help them set up a small coop/run for a fewchickens. I wish more people helped and taught instead of shaking heads and saying "what an idiot "!
im sorry if i havent said hello to you. i remember you from the "dumbest things people have said......." thread. i remember that you and i think alot alike. welcome to the tread! and i hope you get moved back here!

i can teach you to garden, im just guessing your making it out to be harder than it is. when spring comes around, if you want to try again; let me know and i will help you get it going.

i can also show you how to milk a goat, but i dont know a thing about pasturizing it.

congrats on the egg!

Thanks! I may take you up on that! I have a great place to start a garden (great-grandfather used to grow one near enough right in front of my house and the ground should be great still), just have never had any luck keeping green things, other than weeds, alive. I haven't even tried breeding the goat yet because I read you can't sell raw milk? and I wouldn't know what the heck to do with it. :p

I have a pasturizer. Years and years ago we had a milk cow for one summer and the farmer we bought her from gave it to us. It holds a gallon of milk I think. It just heats it to the right temp, 180 degrees I think, and kills any bacteria. I may be wrong on the temp. I don't know if it still works or not. We haven't used it since then. I kept it because it is old. I have a friend who raises milk goats. You are right, shaybaby, you are not allowed to sell raw milk. If anyone is wanting goats milk, going in shares on the goats is the legal way to go. My friend will give me some milk when I make goats milk soap. But she has to be careful.
OH Yeah, I forgot to tell you all, on Friday I went out to check eggs and there were 7! Sat. we got 5, 2, 3, and 5 today!!!!

im glad your getting some eggs from them. if you can get a dozen extra and i have room in the incubator, i want some.

Ok. I will try. The only problem might be is I have a buckeye rooster in that pen with them. He is usually out with the younger hens though. Your rooster and the hen stay inside the pen. I don't think they have discovered they can come out yet. My hen though is out ranging too. I will try to keep any eye out this weekend to see if yours is mating them both. The buckeye has just reached maturity the last couple of weeks, so he isn't very aggressive. Like I said he is usually out with the younger flock that is just reaching maturity. I could pen the marans up together for a week or so if it is necessary.

400

Put 7 blue laced red wyandottes in lock down today 2 hatched. These eggs were shipped from Texas started out with 14 and will probably only have 3 hatch. Setting 20 in lock down tomorrow that was shipped from Kentucky. Hoping to have better luck with this bunch.
