OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I would love to help with the co op. I can't keep anything growing in my yard thanks to my beat pack and animals, but am willing to help someone else with there's.I did see something on tv today about growing food all year round in your house. I'm sure I could do garlic, chives, and other root plants.

Here is a link to 16 foods you can regrow from the scraps (indoors).

I get hundreds of ideas from pinterest. How to reuse/repurpose things. How to save money.

I live on the west side of Cleveland and we use vacant lots as community gardens. The plants are donated from somewhere and they are planted then harvested used to feed the neighborhood. If I could find out how its funded maybe it could help in your town.

good morning everyone

Morning :) I love all these ideas! It would be awesome to be able to use everyone's strengths to help a group. I wish more people did things like this. I always start extra garden crops and donate to those I know will use them. A friend of mine just lost her husband and is on her own the first time. I gave her a full fall garden and showed her how to plant, tend, and harvest. Will help her store it when it comes as well. She and her little girl are so excited about learning more, and I am going to help them set up a small coop/run for a fewchickens. I wish more people helped and taught instead of shaking heads and saying "what an idiot "!

im just going by what i was told, i dont even have a facebook account.  but regardless with the changes the government wants to make, it will still get bad. what am i saying, it already is bad.  in the event the government shuts down on the 17th, the food stamp cards wont be far behind.

i just want to make sure we can take care of ourselves.  i know i will be fine in my own,  im more worried about those of you who havent been self sufficient.  its a hard change, and most people dont realize how many things we throw away that we should keep.  i know i throw away probably 150 dozen of eggs a year, that could really help someone im sure.

150 dozen? Could you sell those along your road? Around here, there are a few people who sell eggs, except everyone's chickens got old at the same time, so it's challenging to get eggs consistently.

Most neighbors sell them for $2/dozen. My "next door" neighbor used to sell them for $1/dozen.

There's a need! I like the donation idea, too.

Off topic, after going to the Delaware swap last week and seeing the chickens and rabbits, I had second thoughts about getting them. I'm almost positive I won't be able to keep meat rabbits, even with DH taking care of the dirty deed. They are too much like cats with cute long ears. The chickens were beautiful (and some were so big!) I had wanted to raise meat birds and layers.

So, I'm still thinking about it. I think it would be a great thing for my kids (they are too young to help right now, but in the future) and it would be nice to have eggs regularly. My husband was with me when I went to buy eggs from the teenager around the corner and down the street (I live in the country, it's a few likes away) and her chickens were wandering around the yard. As we drove home, he said, "we will get chickens."

It makes a difference to have him fully on board, versus this being my project.

Ok, new here but this post is interesting. I live in Columbus close to Westerville. We have 4 hens, but if the h.o.a. finds out they won't like it. We are looking for a house with a little land in west columbus so we can raise more chickens and do a garden. If anyone knows of a house for rent that will house 9 let me know.

Welcome! I lived in Columbus for 11 years (and even though I'm in the country, I didn't move that far away).

I can't help you with the housing situation, though. Good luck!

natashka - i can sell them, but i never know when i am going to have the extras. i gave away several dozen to people who wanted to try hatching, or failed at a first attempt. i do sell some hatching eggs here and there, and we hatch and sell about 300 a week (sometimes more) here. i know 150 dozen sounds like alot, but thats only about 3 dozen a week.

elohist- welcome to the thread, feel free to jump right in - almost all of us on this tread are normal - except that loveourbirds guy.

other items i thought might be worth trading - baked goods, canning services, firewood, maybe even some carpentry skills could be bartered. anyone else have any ideas?

More good ideas! I make soap. We burn wood so maybe firewood and my DH is a carpenter, but I'm not sure how much time he would have and I'm not going to volunteer him without his permission!!

I have a hard time catching him long enough to get some things done around here!!

But it is a possibility. I think the possibilities are endless. I think for any need, there is someone who probably could meet that need via bartering. Just need to know where and how to find it. This co-op would be a great way to meet that need. Maybe a way to post your need so others could see it. If they couldn't meet it, they may know someone who could. Just have to be careful that people aren't taken advantage of. A couple of chickens for a cord of wood would not be a fair barter unless the ones getting the chickens really had a need for them. But I guess that would be between the two barterers. Baked goods and canning services are awesome. My DIL and a friend of hers were making salsa, jams, and other canned goods they made from their own gardens, and taking them to a farmers market in Montgomery OH, and the people begged them to come up with home cooked meals to put in the freezer, to have when they came home from work. They never got into that, but the need was there.
