OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Bad day here today. Oy... Started out only mildly rotten. Got a shipment of Christmas gifts I ordered from amazon only to find them all totally shattered. Then my cat (who's lucky I love him dearly..) completely ruined my hallway carpet (new house..). I've been sick and hurting all day. Then to top it off, DH got home from work about half an hour ago (almost 2am) and informed me we no longer have a means of transportation. On the way home he hit a big buck and the front of the car is just completely gone (I saw it..). I don't know how that thing made it the last couple miles home. This after our second car died just a couple weeks ago and we sold it for scrap.

Well, at least all my chickens are alive and healthy! And DH wasn't hurt in the total, I guess that's something to be thankful for too..
Oh Shay! So sorry to hear about that I hope you can find a vehicle soon. I know it's hard to find something at a decent price anymore. Hopefully you get to feeling better especially with this weather lately.

This is my white silkie hen that went broody the day after Thanksgiving (November 29th) and she was born this past spring and of course not a year old yet and she is sitting on 5 silkie eggs and her hatch day is December 19th and I'm gonna get a tarp to put over the pen so the chicks feet are not in the snow but all you buckeyes know how cold and brutal Ohio winter can be and I'm just hoping the chicks are gonna do good with there momma hen

what breeds do you have?
small flock consists of 1 rir 5yr old hen name nibbles. 2 silver laced Wyandot hens , 2 light brahma hens and 1 big light brahma rooster. and 12+ bcm eggs in mail from Tennessee ( cottage hill line] all my birds are well taken care of and seem happy and look great

that's an interesting selection you have. silly question but why did you choose cottage hill line for your BCM's? *Most* people go for the Bev Davis line. i know they are both very respected breeders.

Ha! My Buckeyes all seem to love this weather! When I opened their barn this morning at 6:30 they all came bustling out and have been scratching around since. The New Hampshires and chochins are still in their barn and even with the sun shining a little bit do not seem inclined to want to come out! The turkeys aren't even coming out! The Buckeyes just don't seem to mind anything weather wise......happy chickens!

I'm jealous. Buckeyes are what I wanted to get but at the time couldn't find any that weren't stupid prices. So I settled for a half-dozen RiR from TSC. Something to learn with and not too upsetting or expensive if something goes wrong. They are fine in the cold, they just don't like the snow. Last snow we got there were still some bare patches on the ground. They stuck to them. To get to another patch, they'd fly if they could otherwise it was a mad sprint across the snow. But, only after much consternation of whether to make the run or not.

Unfortunately, their run is not covered so it is full of snow at the moment. Swept off their ramp this morning thinking it might be less intimidating for them but no luck, they were not coming out of the coop. So, I tossed a little bit of scratch into their bedding to give them something to scratch at. And it lets them fluff their own bedding. hehe Also tossed in some extra bedding.
