Brrrrr!! As far as I know, the temp + wind chill has only dropped to -28 here in Lucasville. Worried sick about my animals outside, although we did bring in the majority of chickens for the night lol. Hasn't been this cold out since I was in grade school.
Our chickens are shut up in the coop and faired fine last night. Just feed cracked corn and oats on top of everything else, before they roost. It does depend on which breeds you have too?? We have 1 RIR and 5 Barred Rocks. Which are hardy breeds. We don't use any heat or bulb either. Just a draft free actual wooden coop.
We lost one last night, our hen Summer. She was a Dark Cornish mix, just a year and a half old. she'd had some problems with Cocci (at least that's what we treated her for) in the fall, and she seemed to make a full recovery, but I noticed last night that she was very cold (they all were):/ and it seemed she had lost weight when I picked her up. I put her in a covered pen with deep straw and a heated microwave disc, she seemed ok, and settled down next to it, but she was dead this morning.
Maybe I should have brought her in the house but I just hate to do that, it seems to stress them out so being away from their flock mates and in a strange environment to boot. Today it was -17 this morning, but actually the flock seems more cheerful...the sun is out and the wind is dying down. Have not heard one peep from our neighbor's chickens or their rooster...I hope they are ok, they are in an open coop with just a tarp. :/ I think Summer might have had some underlying problem besides the cold, that we just didn't realize, and the cold just topped it off.
