OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Brrrrr!! As far as I know, the temp + wind chill has only dropped to -28 here in Lucasville. Worried sick about my animals outside, although we did bring in the majority of chickens for the night lol. Hasn't been this cold out since I was in grade school.

Our chickens are shut up in the coop and faired fine last night. Just feed cracked corn and oats on top of everything else, before they roost. It does depend on which breeds you have too?? We have 1 RIR and 5 Barred Rocks. Which are hardy breeds. We don't use any heat or bulb either. Just a draft free actual wooden coop.

Yeah, my LF weren't affected by the cold at all. But I prefer bantams, so the majority of my flock (40+) are tiny bantams, frizzles, silkies, or youngsters. Amongst them, I have a micro frizzled serama that made it through single digits the whole winter so far with no heat lamp in our big drafty coop...I thought I owed them this kindness lol. The 5 LF and fluffier breeds like the faverolles bantams stayed out with the ducks and were fine.
Glad yours made it through well! Hope everyone else's did too!

We lost one last night, our hen Summer.

She was a Dark Cornish mix, just a year and a half old. she'd had some problems with Cocci (at least that's what we treated her for) in the fall, and she seemed to make a full recovery, but I noticed last night that she was very cold (they all were)

and it seemed she had lost weight when I picked her up. I put her in a covered pen with deep straw and a heated microwave disc, she seemed ok, and settled down next to it, but she was dead this morning.

Maybe I should have brought her in the house but I just hate to do that, it seems to stress them out so being away from their flock mates and in a strange environment to boot. Today it was -17 this morning, but actually the flock seems more cheerful...the sun is out and the wind is dying down. Have not heard one peep from our neighbor's chickens or their rooster...I hope they are ok, they are in an open coop with just a tarp.

I think Summer might have had some underlying problem besides the cold, that we just didn't realize, and the cold just topped it off.

Oh no! So sorry! I hate to suggest this but could she possibly have had lice or mites? I have heard a bunch of people lately say they found some on their chickens. With the weather being so cold if they have lice or mites that will take them down really quick. I hope they don't have any but you might want to check them out just to be sure.

Sorry for your loss!
I also lost one of my favorite chickens during the last cold snap....she was small & had cocci this summer during all the rain, she was my only Silver ameracauna....hugs to you!!!!

Hey buckeyes,I have a partridge silkie rooster that I need to sell I have too many roosters in the flock and he don't attack,he mates, crows and loves his hen. If your interested let me know thanks

Thank you Chckadee and Farmer's Wife. That's interesting that yours had cocci too....a friend suggested that maybe they don't recover from that as fast as we think they should, and that she might still have been anemic and underweight from it. She SEEMED ok, but maybe not so much. WE also lost one of our new chickies today despite their mamma's best efforts. Amazingly, all the rest of her chicks seem happy, healthy, curious and always hungry...
