OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Hi everybody....I'm new to this forum site...from southeastern Ohio - in Tuppers Plains...new to chickens too! This is our first year...we have 13 pullets...started getting them Feb 28, 2011.

Hello fellow Ohioans

I'm in NE Ohio, Lakewood specifically.

New to the site and learning a lot so far. I may have hit my first "wall" though. I'm trying to find info on whether or not I'm allowed to have chickens in the town where I live. I haven't been able to find any real info yet however. I'm anxious to get to work on a coop and stuff but I need to find out if it will be for naught or not before I invest the time and money.

Hey OhPete, check here: http://www.conwaygreene.com/Lakewood/lpext.dll?f=templates&fn=main-h.htm&2.0 Go through it carefully yourself. It looks like Lakewood is ok with fowl in general. There was one reference about having an excessive number, which is not more specificly defined, and about animals or fowl creating a disturbance which to me sounds like if you had roosters and the neighbors complained etc... but if they're well housed and kept clean etc, it looks likely that Lakewood is ok with chickens. Look things over carefully yourself though! My word means nothing! (I was born in Parma BTW! It was long ago but I remember Lakewood as being very animal friendly)

Here's the overall start of the ordinance pages just in case you want to dig deeper. http://www.conwaygreene.com/lakewood.htm There is of course a possibility that something here could be out of date, but it gives you a start and a jumping off place so if you print things out and go to the courthouse, you can ask smarter questions. Good luck.

///// edit to add ///// Sorry, I was wrong! I kept searching and found this... http://www.conwaygreene.com/Lakewood/lpext.dll?f=templates&fn=main-hit-h.htm&2.0 So yeah, chickens are prohibited, which seems silly because of all the talk about keeping fowl in clean housing and proper structures and pens for fowl. I would have deleted my whole comment if I could, but since I'd already stuck my foot in the poo, I thought I'd leave it and just edit with this comment. Sorry!

I in Toledo. Almost at the OH/MI border! My own came home 2 1/2 weeks ago. Planned on 2 to see what I was getting into, but 2 came home to be cared for, and no one else would buy them, so they now have a real home. We bought 5 red pullets, to which I forgot to see the breed. Can you tell I am new? And 2 that were injured are white leghorns pullets.

I think that the hatchery made an error though as my one leghorn, sure looks like it has a big comb already? He/she is so small though, but that could be to such a severe injury, that he/she just didn't eat well for days. I kept it hydrayted though. Time will tell what it is !

Glad to know there are folks out there from the great state of Ohio

Or move out to the country.

I really love living outside of town, it's great, you're almost expected to have livestock, chickens, dogs, etc.

If I could move out to the country I surely would

I found the code..although the wording is a bit interesting considering how they mention "dangerous" and "vicious" and then at the bottom of the list include chickens

I am going to go talk to the Director of Public Safety and see if I can find out more info and apply for an exception if possible and/or see if we can get this Ordinance revised.

505.18 CERTAIN ANIMALS PROHIBITED.

(a) No person shall knowingly keep, maintain or have in his possession or under his control within the City any dangerous or carnivorous wild animal or reptile, any vicious domesticated animal, or any other animal or reptile, with vicious or dangerous propensities, except to the extent that an exemption may be applicable pursuant to subsections (c) or (d) hereof.

I'll just include the last few items on the list of prohibited animals for reference...

(24) Rhinoceroses (Rhinocerotidae);
(25) Sharks (class Chondrichthyes);
(26) Snow leopards (Panthera uncia);
(27) Swine (Suidae), including Pot-bellied pigs;
(28) Tigers (Panthera tigris);
(29) Wolves (Canis lupus), including wolf hybrids;
(30) All game birds, water fowl, chickens and roosters.

There is a clause listed that states:
(d) Notwithstanding any of the foregoing, the Director of Public Safety may grant a specific exemption, on a temporary or permanent basis, from any of the provisions of this section to any person with a legitimate scientific, educational, commercial or other purpose for maintaining the prohibited animals, in accordance with the following provisions:
((numerous subsections follow))
