OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I am traveling to Meyer on Tuesday to pick up chicks. by driving up there, I was able to order a smaller amount of chicks (I am just starting out with 5)... and I could choose from a bigger variety. I am soooo excited! yay! I am working on my coop plans now and hope to get that started by the first of the week. that should allow me time to get it done before the chicks are ready to meet the 'real' world.

if anyone in the columbus area would like me to pick up chicks or items for them, let me know... you could call and order/pay and we could meet up on the north side of columbus.

So since my lil darlings are due to arrive early February I'm calling around to get feed prices.

A wonderful person earlier in the thread had posted a few Co-Ops etc to possibly get things cheaper. I called around. This is what I got. Hopefully this will help give others options (outside of TSC!)

ALL 50LBS

CountryLine -Pemberville OH
Purina- starter, medicated 17.75
Purina- Layer Granulated-17.55

17% Grower, Small Pellets-13.50
16% Layer, Small Pellets-14.00

Masserant's- Lambertville, MI ( I didn't call another store, but there are several)

Country Acres-16%, Grower- 15.50

Monroe Feeds- Monroe, MI

He recommends Turkey Starter vs Chick starter - anyone heard of this? Seriously nice guy said to stay clear of Dumor (all my TSC has!) and Hubbard
Said he could also order me in a "Triumph" Medicated Chick Starter if that's what I wanted to go with. Buckeye brand seems pricier, but honestly this guy was awesome. I'm thinking of driving up there just for the knowledge!

Oaks Feed- Toledo,OH
Prince Brand - layer crumbles and pellets -17.95

J&B Feed -Swanton, OH
OWN MIX- Layer, 14%, MASH- 14.50

Luckey Farmers, Lemoyne (just outside Perrysburg, OH)
OWN MIX- Broiler starter for 8 weeks -15.33
OWN MIX- Layer Mash- 13.60

Anyone care to share what they feed and where they get it from? I'm located just outside of Toledo, OH. Also, anyone have a guess how much feed 15 chicks are going to go through? How long does a 50lb bag last your layers?

I'm getting more and more excited by the day!!

*editing for more updating/adding info*
A layer should get .25# per day. 15 layers should eat just under 4# a day, but that's for adults. Not sure how much chicks eat since I started with pullets.

I feel like I'm forever asking questions here! Where does everyone get their hardware cloth from? I understand that 1/2 is better than 'poultry netting'. Does anyone know of a store either near Toledo, OR Columbus that isn't a big box store that sells hardware cloth without costing an arm and a leg. It will be the most expensive part of our coop without even blinking an eye. The only reason I say not a 'big box' store is because I've heard they're easily the most expensive! I checked a few places online- but the shipping KILLS it! I really do appreciate all the help that comes along!

I've ordered from them before and it hasn't been outrageous...

Hmmm.... I think we bought ours at Home Depot for on the coop itself and then bought regular chicken wire fencing for the run at Tractor Supply. Unfortunately the Mom & Pop shops here are much more expensive than the big box stores. In fact I discovered the bag of feed I was buying was $5 more for 50lbs at the local mill than at TSC. I would love to support the locals but that's a big difference.

Yeah, I keep looking for a source for cheap 1" chicken wire. The best price I've found yet is Menard's. Haven't gotten any hardware cloth much as I would like to -- it's just a bit pricey for me at the moment!

Anyone else setting a hatch this weekend? I have silkie eggs coming (yay, silkies!) so planning to set them Saturday morning :)

I agree, this has been a great place for info & support!
I am getting 5 chicks on Tuesday:
1 rhode island red
1 barred rock
1 blue laced red wyandotte
2 easter eggers
can't wait to start this crazy adventure!

I thought about 1", I'm apprehensive since our coop won't be inside the fenced portion of our land. I've seen some foxes, I'm sure there is a raccoon or ten around too..I thought about 1/2 on the bottom 3-4 feet and then 1" on top...

Hello,fellow Ohioans!

I am looking for excellent quality bearded Wilkie chicks. Anyone know of a great breeder here in Ohio?

Thanks in advance!!
