OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I must say I'm excited for the weekend. I get to pick up some new chicks. DH is so concerned about his "great anniversary surprise" he didn't say no. Lol BTW it's a 4 wheeler. Had to share I'm horrible with secrets. Anyway. Can anyone tell me if there are anyways to sex the following breeds; RIR, olive Eggers, lavender orps, and splash marans. They are selling them straight run. Oh, and Americanas and Americana fizzle/white rock. I don't mind a roo or two but would really rather get all pullets is possible.

We bought them as our starter flock and my 9-y-o was considering showing. He has decided showing isn't for him and I have so many requests for eggs I can't justify keeping them around. Still getting some eggs from the younger girls who are 1 & 1/2 or so but since our SPPR rooster was killed and they aren't a high producer it's time for them to move on. They are from Dick Horstman and the guy who bought them as chicks paid $40 a piece. I think I know where their NPIP papers are.
I'm pretty sure the older hens are no longer laying but could probably still be shown.

I am looking for some silkies, prefer hens or pullets of assorted colors. Must be between cleveland and Mansfield and available Saturday! LOL....I just happen to be planning to head down that way on Saturday morning and would love to pick some up for my son, who just adores silkies....

I don't really need white silkies, though....

They have found a new home about an hour away! They can live out their days happily clucking away!

Now... where do I find started pullets close to laying age and do we add in a new breed? I feel some research and shopping coming on!

I'm having a very frustrating week chicken-wise, and none of my non-chicken friends can really relate, so I'm venting here. I'm in the throes of having 45 EAB-afflicted ash trees removed; mostly from my yard and near the driveway (a tragedy of its own). I hired the tree removal company before Christmas and they said it would take 10 days. They also said there would also be a point when I would have to move some of the chickens.

Well, I didn't know it was going to be 10 days spread out over the course of a year (a decade..., a century.....), and back in December I had a good plan for moving what was then two social groups of chickens. Now, things are different; roosters have grown up. The tree people told me Wednesday was the day, so Tuesday night I scrambled to come up with a plan. I now have 4 non-compatible groups with separate coops and electronet fencing. Two of the coops are on wheels, but with the cut trees all over the yard, I have nowhere to move them. I ended up completely dismantling one of these and stashing those chickens in a coop that has a young solitary rooster (another long story). He went into a dog crate on my porch. There's a tree that needs to be cut in the run for the stationary coop, so I moved the fencing so the tree is now on the outside, but as long as it stands, it is a perfect route for raccoons to get in. Naturally, with all the storms, nothing was done with the trees yesterday and now I'm in a holding pattern until who knows when. I took a personal day from work and have spent it critter-proofing my coops to the best of my ability.

Moral of my story? Planning in advance gets you nowhere, and always have twice as much housing as you think you need! Thanks for listening.....

We have the same thing going on with 2 of our Ameraucanas. They seem healthy, just not growing as fast as the others. I know Ameraucanas can range pretty widely in size tho. Unsure about red sexlinks. I'll definitely be watching to see the experienced chicken people weigh in on this tho.

And welcome to the Forum!

Curious to see if anyone else has a Facebook page devoted to their chickens/farm. Anybody? You show me yours and I'll show you mine! LOL

I have a blog:

It's not quite up to date, but it tells most of the story!
