OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

i keep looking for hatching eggs because i dont want to pay the price for these http://greenfirefarms.com/store/category/chickens/ayam-cemani/ ill have brussbars for sale in 2015 with chicks starting at $500.00 each (some offers will be made on chicks in 2014, but its an investment risk). well, if everything goes right i will

. price of chickens depends on age/quality/rarity. something like a chocolate wynadotte has a muting gene, if you breed 2 chocolates together, you will get mostly sports and only 25% chocolate. (breed sports to black for 100% chocolate). because of constantly adding in black color, its hard to improve the quality of them. several of our newer colorations are that way, they are more for hobby breeding and show breeding than for your typical egg laying flock. some of these to watch for are blue, fawn, chocolate, and lemon cuckoo colorations. any of these colors will bring top dollar in their breeds. also since im on the subject, there has been fertility trouble in jubilie orpingtons so buy with caution.
. I love those ayam cemani but I believe I'll stick with the breeds that I dont need a second mortgage to buy....I can't afford thousands for a breeding pair! I'm not sure who can!

ive been beating my head against the wall on learning this stuff. for some reason everyone wants double barred lemon cuckoo orp roosters. if they end up with a barred hen and just buy a pair they will have a mess on their hands. i always try to warn people about "trouble genes" before they buy. the last thing i want to do is send someone with a bunch of birds that wont give them the results they are looking for.

I know most people are taught with chickens that breeding color X to color X = color X. Not everyone sees the fact that there are genetics behind those colors and that x+x does not always make x. That is why there is so many "what is this color posts". I found that out with my sikies. I had some blacks that would throw partridge plus some off the wall non standard colors every once in a while. Come to find out they were someone else's splits from lavender and who knows what else projects. There is always genetics to consider behind every bird and you won't know for sure what you got till they are old enough to produce chicks on their own. Someone can tell you anything but you never know till you find out for yourself.

there are to many people out there who claim to be "breeders" that just throw a rooster in with hens too. a true "breeder" should be breeding for best qualities, while trying to breed out the problems. i know on the old english, several people dont pay attention to the combs, but a thumbnail comb will show up even after its dubbed. and the white earlobes in them, ill buy a trio that has a hen with soft white earlobes, but if the rooster shows white i wont buy. then starts the aggressive culling.

of course to someone who just wants to make more laying hens, none of this is important. those people look at me like im nuts because all my birds are in cages by breed. to some people a chicken is just a chicken. i was once told there was only to breeds of chickens - big ones and banties. i really wish they would have informed me of that before i spent all this money buying rare breeds and penning them up seperate.

im not sure who would have done it, their heads were outside of the cage. i kept looking out last night and didnt see any animals that shouldnt be there. we did have puppies last night 14 one was stillborn. if anyone wants any 3/4 blue heelers let me know.

i think im going to order another dozen of eggs for them and try again. my neighbors for the most part dont have a problem with my chickens - they get free eggs and meat. when i first got into this they did ask me to keep them penned so they didnt get in their gardens. ive always kept them penned, if one gets loose and is wandering to far i get it caught and put back up.

if for some reason i quit posting all of a sudden, it was a person and im in jail

I completely understand. I had someone ask me the other day what do I call the chicks that are from a black Orpington rooster and a light Brahma hen? Are half of them light Brahma and the other half black Orpington? I was like, um no, they're mutts. They still looked at me like I had two heads.

it appeared to have some bluetick coonhound in it, it was red spotted similar to their dad.
Just thought I'd mention I saw the doggy parents and they do look very heeler-y. :p Last time I'll mention these darn eggs, I swear! I opened up the last 5 serama eggers I assumed didn't make it and indeed, they quit. All fully formed and beautiful. So sad. I'm a bit confused on what could have happened to them, though. I got advice from the seller who said my 70% lockdown humidity was too high and they probably drowned. Well, the biggest and presumably oldest was very wet and possibly did drown. But the other 4 looked maybe a day or two younger and looked shrink-wrapped??..unless being left in a few days after quitting dried them out. Ugh. Poor things. Anyways, live and learn.

Hi I am new to this thread and the sight. I live in Cincinnati and herd that there may be a swap meet in mt orb? I would be totally interested in this
