Back in April I bought chics at Easter for the kids so we could raise them for eggs. One of them has turned out to be a rooster that I must find a home for. My neighbors love the thought of fresh eggs but definitely not the 430 am crowing of a rooster!!! Plz contact me at [email protected] if you are interested.

my egg numbers are going up!! Pullets I have laying so far are GLW, SS and two EE.I have seen one light brahma checking out box as well. No dark combs yet on my Cochins or bantys, but it shouldn't be long.

Oh and Hello everyone and welcome to the new people to the thread!! I am still recovering from surgery, picking up around 20 lbs is my current limit, so many trips to the coop to feed still. My bending and walking are better but twisting is still a no no! Since I am off still I really need to finigh my coop chinking, sigh. So much to do n so little time.

everything i had planned out to get my new and first flock of chickens went all wrong, it was a total disaster , we had a death in the family, my wife's mom got sick and had to have an operation, and then granny had a stroke, all within 3 weeks of each other , and we spent 2 weeks in the hospital with her mom and granny.

all the time i had set aside to build my coop and then most of the money too went poof, sooo i had to make an old broken shed into my coop, and then a hawk ate my buff orpington so now i supervise there free running

eventually I'll be able to buy netting to put over there fenced in run (i had no idea hawks would take the chickens when they are this big) the hawks here have like 5 foot wing spans, and are so powerful they don't even bother taking the chickens with them, they just kill it and eat what they want right on the ground, my poor dog doesn't know what to do with a hawk, it's got feathers too, i think it confuses him. all in all i learned so much already even though I've made some mistakes, like having to many roosters and dealing with the hawks but I'm working the kinks out, i just keep thinking "this is my first flock don't beat yourself up to hard" it's only been since June i started raising chickens

i do not even know what age they start to lay eggs, lol, I'm just winging it( my wife knows all that stuff though) I'm taking pictures of them today so you guys can see how pretty they are, i think they are beautiful chickens (are they called chicks..or..chickens..or hens? and whats a pullet?)

I am so glad i joined this forum, there is huge amount of stuff for me to learn, and everyone is so nice

Aww, sorry about your lousy luck, please hang in there and don't give up. I had a tough beginning also but we weathered it and it is definitely worth it. After we worked out all of the kinks we have had so much fun and enjoyment from our little chicken empire. Good luck!!

I'm so sorry for your run of bad luck! Have you checked out the deer netting?(keeps 'em out of your garden) I got a roll 7ft x 100 ft at Menards for around $14. Am planning to top my new run with it. Figured I could "sew" it together to make it wide enough. You probably are aware of it, but just in case. ...

Lowes carries this but calls it "wildlife netting." I just overlap a couple inches at the edges & use the little zipties ebout every 12-16 inches to hold them together.

Beautiful! Love the light egg palate. I'm assuming your Speckled Sussex laid the pink ones and the one with the white speckles? That one is my favorite! Are the larger ones in the center from hens or ducks?

Our Easter Egger Clara laid her first egg on Tuesday and her second this afternoon. The first was quite the ordeal, I think she was egg bound. She is our most skittish girl so I was amazed that after going in and out of the coop she hopped up on my lap and chose me to be her "midwife".
