Yeah I honestly think they don't change the minimum because it keeps city/suburb people from getting chickens, even though they may be allowed to. It just makes it more inconvenient so people just decide against it. Luckily, I stumbled upon BYC and learned about all these hatcheries and other options. If not, who knows what I would have done. But now I'm still stuck driving all the way to Meyer to get 3 chicks when there are plenty of chicks at my local TSC that never sell (because no one in the suburbs needs 6 at a time).

I live in SE Ohio and our TSC has the same crazy rule. I want 6-8 chickens but I want a great variety. The local Whites Mill is getting chicks in April and will let us pick up the breeds we want as they come in!

Hello! Does anyone know if Columbus, Ohio allows chickens within city limits? I’ve had 3 hens for over a year now but now I am reading some conflicting information that makes me a little worried.

Wow, Columbus's city website makes it so hard to find this info. I tried. I would call the city and ask directly. Possibly start with the animal control department and maybe they can answer or transfer you to someone who can answer the question. I did find an article from 2016 that said residents can now have up to 4 chickens, and the Columbus city website mentions the 2016 ordinance, but I can't find the actual ordinance. How dumb. It's probably still 4 but I would call the city and find out, because it seems like there were coop and run size restrictions as well.

Yes, the limit is 4. You have to have a permit if you don't have one already. They will want to do an inspection when you apply for one.

Where do you see this info? The first link says you only need a permit for certain animals and chickens aren't listed. The second link does not give info about the chicken ordinance in the actual city of Columbus, just nearby suburbs and villages. Unless I'm not reading these correctly.

Fowl/birds are listed in the bottom paragraph under "animal permits." My friend who lived in the Bethel road area had to get her permit and was subject to constant inspections after her initial one because her neighbors who told her it would be great if she had chickens changed their minds and were making things up to get the health department to come out and harass her. Of course she did everything perfectly so they had nothing with which to cite her. I could have sworn that article from the Messenger had more municipalities listed in it but I must have gotten my tabs confused, for a thirty-something I really don't have the browsing on a smart phone thing down.

I love dogs but they are much more of a nuisance to neighbors with their barking and people who walk them but don't clean up their poop, yet there's no permit or inspection required for those. Idk why some cities give people trouble about getting a few hens. Banning roosters in urban/suburban areas I understand, but hens are really not much bother to neighbors.

I think because the hens were loud they said she had roosters too. The inspector was always super nice and had great things to say about her setup and could never find any evidence of what they were complaining about. So I think as long as you adhere to their guidelines they'll work with you but when keeping chickens in the city you've gotta cover your butt.

Hey, I found the Ohioans thread!
I'm originally from the Akron/Canton area, lived in the Cleveland suburbs for 23 years before we bought a home on 18 acres in SW Medina county. We're getting chickens this fall - I have an order for August for Cinnamon Queens, Buff Orps, Cuckoo Marans, and Barnevelders. I hope to add a few Easter Eggers later on (already accounting for chicken math!). Fortunately, I'm only about a 40 minute drive from Meyer.
