Ohio National....Who's all going?

I thought parking was free for exhibitors?

Parking is NEVER free at the fairgrounds! The Ohio State Fair goat show is held 2 weeks before the fair even starts and we have to pay parking each time we come through the gate. Sometimes, if you're coming in for a meeting at the administration office (for example, to view the fairgrounds to possibly hold an event) or to set-up for an event, you can talk your way past the parking attendants but otherwise, you either need to pay the $5 every time you go through the gate OR buy an event pass. In the many events I've attended at the fairgrounds, the event parking pass has been more like 2-3 times the cost of daily parking ($10-$15) but if you intend on gong in/out more than a couple of times, it's well worth it. A quick trip through the McDonald's drive-through becomes a bit pricey if you add the $5 parking fee without the parking pass. Parking is handled by a third-party contractor and the people manning the booths don't aren't empowered to make decisions so arguing your point with them is of very little use.

Thanks Tom - that's very helpful stuff to know. I'm glad I asked.

No problem. I live just north of Columbus and frequently go to events in Columbus. Keep in mind that the fairgrounds isn't in the greatest of neighborhoods. You've got a bit of the university (Ohio State) near but the general area is a lower socio-economic area where crime is a bit more prevelent than in other areas. You're fine on the fairgrounds but I wouldn't spend lots of time in the area off the fairgrounds.

Keep in mind also that Saturday at 3:30 is homecoming for Ohio State as they play Penn State. Unless you like a loud, young, drunk crowd, you probably don't want to go anywhere near campus on Saturday evening. If they win, they'll be drinking to celebrate. If they lose, they'll be drinking to drown their sorrows. They also often do park and rides at the fairgrounds to the stadium so the fairground's traffic may be busier than normal come Saturday afternoon and evening. Fortunately it sits right off I-71 so getting in/out shouldn't be a big deal but just be aware there may be some extra traffic.

Columbus is a mecca of great restaurants. I don't know what functions there may be with the show itself, but for those that are looking for places to dine, not only does the Columbus area have all the major chains, we've got some great locally owned places as well. The Short North (south of campus, north of downtown - 5-10 minute drive from the fairgrounds) has tons of locally owned places with great food. Most have their menus posted so you can get an idea of what they have and pricing before you go in. Parking can be a bit difficult but once you park, everything is easy walking. I think the host hotel is in the Polaris area and there are tons of mostly chain restaurants that way but everything you can imagine is available. If anyone wants suggestions or more information, PM or e-mail me and let me know what area of town and I'll give you some suggestions.

I know that there will be lots of birds for sale and I've also read that they would all be from exhibitors, what I haven't seen any info on is if you are exhibiting, how do you go about getting sale cages? We are bringing two of our batnam birds but I have a couple LF I'd like to rehome.

I have two black Ameraucana roosters, about 4 months, that I was considering bringing but not sure how the sale cages get reserved? Didn't see anything on the website about sale cages either. Also wondering when sales start? I know you can check in from 9AM-10PM on friday, so I would guess people start selling right away?

If any one is interested....I have 4 straight run Blue Laced Red Wyandotte peeps that will be just shy of 2 weeks old this coming Friday. Looks like 2 Blue Laced and 2 Black Laced. I am not sure what time I will be arriving in Columbus on Friday, but I would be happy to bring them with me. I would love to keep them, but I am out of brooder space. I am asking $5.00 each for them. I also have an extra Black Laced (BLRW) cockerel that is gorgeous, just too many boys. He is approx. 30 weeks old and is good with the ladies and people. I am asking $15.00 for him. And I also have a pet quality Silver Laced Brahma cockerel that is about 26 weeks old. He is big and friendly, just doesn't have good lacing. I am asking $5.00 for him. I will only tote these guys to the show if someone is seriously interested in them. Send me a PM or you can email me for pics at [email protected] I will only be in Columbus on Friday as I have to work on Saturday

Well its official! Etched in stone! I am going to the Ohio Nationals this year!!! I'm So excited to see all the birds and pick the brains of some breeders and of course meeting fellow BYCers!! I'm driving from MN with my 3 DD's. Girls road trip!! About a 13 hr drive from Mpls so its a good thing we all get along! I was originally going to try to pick up some wyandottes but one by one all DD's were able to go so unless they agree to the ride home with chickens in their laps I guess that is out!

We'll be getting in Fri eve. Do I understand right that it is open til 10:00pm Fri evening?

Mrs Turbo I'm especially looking forward to seeing BLRW's actually being shown! I went down to the MN state fair this year and of the breeds I'm working with (Buff & Light Sussex and BLRW's) there wasn't a single one there! Duane Urch did have some beautiful wyandottes there tho!

See you all in Ohio!
