Hey,
I live in Canada, where it gets very cold (-39 degrees celsius). My chickens water freezes in an instant (we do have electricity in the coop) but even with a heating base the water freezes. Are there any tricks on how to stop the water from freezing? I did find some online, like big tubs, black tubs, ping pong balls, etc. but our coop is too small for any of those and the water is indoors. But what else?

Ps. I know this is a stupid question but, is it possible to find an oil that keeps water from freezing less fast, or at all? :fl

Also, what are the best essential oils for hens (during the winter preferably). Are there some that make them happier? And what are some boredom busters for chickens during the winter? I've heard about the hanging cabbage, problem is, they don't like cabbage at all, they like cucumbers and zucchini but I can't hang that haha. So any help?

Thank you each and every one of you people out there! (Even if you only read until the end and did not answer any questions haha) :thumbsup

If properly wired, electricity is the way to go. Has anybody ever tried those heated dog water bowls? Though I can imagine chickens kicking dirt in it.

I found a heated chicken waterer:

Don't know how well it works, though.

My heater is in my signature.

I use a 50w halogen flood rated for 4 years use, but could easily increase the wattage if necessary.

This will be the second year using the same bulb, I have 3 spares on the shelf waiting for the first to burn out.

The coldest recorded temperature I have had, -2, no issues with 3-4 gallons staying liquid.

I would have major problems dealing with frozen conditions without electricity. It would be a deal breaker for me.
