KIVA.ORG is an organization where you can loan money to an individual in another country that wants to start a business to support their community, such as an shoe maker in the jungles of india, and such. The focus is to lift them out of poverty. They are obligated to pay back this loan, as little as $25, and when they do, it is with interest and you redistribute it again. So your $25 turns into 27, then 32, then 41 and so on.

Example: The Uganda General Store has donations of $294 from several people and they are at 50% of their goal to make their business survivable and thrive for their community.

Kiva is awesome, and PC are you thinking of the Heifer Project? Our family gives to that every year. I am a public health nurse and am as you know, partial also to Doctors Without Borders.

Or -hey! Idea coming on! - we could have some kind of food related contest, resulting in everyone who joins in giving money to their local food pantry at the end.

Anyone want to expand on this?

Through Gospel for Asia you can donate chickens and other animals to the very poor. I think they donate the first offspring to someone else. You can also donate tools and other things to help them earn a living. I like this organization because 100% of what you donate goes exactly where you request.

So:

We need a theme.
How about "Buy The World a Chicken Thread".
We can list any and all charities that are worthwild and offer this
type of donation.

Or we can try a contest or game thread but I'm having a hard time
coming up with something.



Someone could post on the thread that they made the donation
or they could post information about charities like we have started
to do here.

Wouldn't it be cool if the BYC membership got together and ended
up donating 100 or more chickens?


Finally, for those unable to donate, we should incorporate a way for
those of us who can to do so for them. Maybe this is where bets
come in or a game. Again, I'm only talking about a couple bucks, I'd
like anyone with an extra dollar sitting around to be able to play.
