I am getting more eggs (from sweet Ms. Jaynie in N. Alabama). She is shipping them out Tuesday. So I have to get the bator set up and get the temp and humidity right. I know I have done this two times but I will probably be back asking questions. I will be getting more Salmon Faverolles and a few more silkies (possilby frizzled) Wish me luck in my continuing addiction. I will keep you posted.

I was just having a discussion with someone about how ideal it is to be able to buy eggs from a reputable source instead of purchasing from a mass hatchery. She felt that the quality was clearly far and away better, and that makes sense to me. It's nice to be able to support the "little guy" where possible too. I hope everything goes well with your latest hatching experience!

I have never ordered from a hatchery. I have ordered from Ms. Jaynie before and I hatched some babies for JulieChickens too and she ended up letting me keep them. I am still pretty new to all of it, so I hope it goes well. I am getting 6 salmon faverolles and 1 black silkie and 3 from sizzles. So I am very excited.

Thanks alot for the support.

How exciting! I'm especially silkie-crazed. I love my hatcherie chicks & will even if they turn into ugly ducklings, but I admire and am slightly jealous of those who had the insight of starting their flock by way of small breeders with high quality stock. In the long-run, that route seems to make the most sense. I hope you'll post pics of your new guys once they hatch!

Well, I don't know that any of mine are show quality. I really just have them for pets. But I have been told that a few of them are pretty nice looking. I of course want to breed toward the standard but I love them even if they are not. I will update along so everyone can share my excitement. That is what this group is all about right? you guys helped in my addiction, so you get to hear every detail whether you want to or not, ha ha.

Just an update. I candled last night, the beginning of day 5, and saw veins and eyes in almost all of the eggs. One is in question but the rest looked to be progressing some. So hoping for a great hatch. My temps ran a bit high on my previous batches, or at least that is what I believe since my eggs hatched a bit early. So I tried running the bator a little lower this time. But I kept getting like 99 on my therm./hygrom and the same on my other therms as well. I have a still air. So I notched it up a bit and now I am running between 99.8 and 100.2. So I think I will leave it there. I had to put a sponge in to get the humidity up to 45-55%. Without it the humidity is running about 39%. The air cells in these eggs are very small so far. The eggs were shipped but were in an egg carton so standing upright instead of laying on the side. I think that makes a difference. Anyway, will keep you updated on any changes. Keep your fingers crossed.

Another update. Last night started day 18. I took the eggs out of the turner and candled each one. I am down to 8 after one more quitting pretty early on. So I have 4 silkie/sizzle eggs and 4 salmon faverolle eggs. Last night they were all moving and had good air cells. I got the humidity up to 73 last night and so this morning I put in another sponge to get it to 80%. Will let you know when I get a pip! Wish me luck and keep your fingers crossed. I need girl silkies and one boy salmon faverolle but not all roos. Thanks.
