You'll need something soft on the roof of the cage so he's hitting something with a bit of give. I've used bubblewrap as ts easy to stick up. Mine seem to have grown out of doing it but I've left it there anyway.

How about the egg crates they use on matresses?They are made of foam and could easily be tied to the top of youe cage.

ask for one on craig's list, people often would rather re purpose than send to landfill. Also might try neosporen on the wound.

Have you been able to do anything for his wound? Saline solution to wash it, then maybe blukote to keep him from being pecked....some antibiotic (not painfree) ointment would help him heal as well...they sound like an adorable pair!

I had this problem (hitting the head and injuring themselves) with some young wild pheasants I rescued as eggs from a nest I rotary slashed over. The solution was something soft ... in the case of pheasants, they normally keep them in pens with shade cloth over them instead of solid. Perhaps you could fix a cloth roof fairly firmly across about 2" below the solid roof so he hits something with some flex and bounce before the roof?
