Do you know how comforting it is to see so many other people suffering from the same craziness.

Wifes friend got two hens. I think well, if she can have chickens, I should be able to have chickens. Got 3 hens and a rooster. Not only did I one up the friend I two upped her. Week later, friend decides she can't have chickens. I adopt her two.

After 3 weeks, chickens still haven't laid an egg. No matter, build my own styro incubator anyway. Get 2 dozen eggs to test the incubator same place I got the chickens. Incubator seems to be working, but temperature swing is about 2-3 degrees. So, build a second styro incubator with a wafer thermostat. Temp swing is down to 1 degree or less. Buy 30 quail eggs to test the second incubator. Find old birch plywood already cut to 16 inch widths in the garage. This must be used for a cabinet style incubator. Cabinet incubator is still in process. What to hatch for a test in that... Ordered a dozen jersey giant eggs. But the cabinet is capable of so much more. I'm hoping with three incubators, three different hatches that the craziness has reached a plateau... But the Speckled Sussex eggs... did you hear that??? Something seems to be calling... Why can't my wife hear that?

I don't think any of you are crazy. I actually think you are all quite smart.

I assume that during this time of year laying usually slows down or stops all together for. Brooding chicks now, during the slow months, means that they will come into lay by Easter time. You get the added benefit of something to keep you entertained during the long winter months. They'll hit their first molt during the warmer months the following year and should resume laying about September when the egg prices start to climb.

Next year I hope to get an incubator, then I'll hop on the crazy train with all of you.

I have to admit, I saw those speckled sussex eggs and though OOOOOOOOHHHHH. Unfortunately, my husband doesn't hear those little voices calling.

ETA: But he is going to build me another coop.

DH won't be happy at all.

You might want to be glad your DH doesn't hear the voices. Mine seems to and together we have NO control. And now our kids think we're crazy! LOL!
