I can't free range mine, either. I also forage for their treats in the yard and garden. Hawks, stray dogs and cats, opossums, and foxes all over my neighborhood. Their coop and run were built tight like Fort Knox. Lol!I do deep litter, I don’t smell ammonia at all ever, but there’s a lot of ventilation too.
I love my chickens! I thank them too for thier eggs every day lol if I could, I’d have house chickens, or like maybe courtyard chickens because the dust is so bad! (I see it now my courtyard aviary LOL)
The chickens ate all the grass in their run so I have to go pull clumps of grass for them daily. I don’t trust the bald eagle we have constantly flying over.
Does this mean I don't need to be embarrassed to tell people that I have three roosters in my back room? Or that one of them wears a diaper and gets along just fine with the cats? Or that they go out for walks or to visit classrooms on leashes? I have "outside chickens," too. Does that redeem me ... even just a little? (giggle, giggle ... buh-bawk!)
Not that weird. Actually pretty cool that they ride in the car so well. I bet you do get weird looks, but most folks are stuck on the idea of having only furry pets. That's never really been an interest of mine. I prefer birds and reptiles, always have. That doesn't phase me one bit, both of our hens are indoor birds. I also have a container set up to hold 500+ crickets at a time, and another set up to hold 500+ superworms, both of which reside in my kitchen. The chickens have enclosures in the living room, about 8 feet away from the parakeets. We moved the rats' cages to DD#2's room a couple years ago, DD's #3 & 4 have 3 fish tanks and 1 frog enclosure in their room, and their are 3 dogs and a cat. Our house isn't that big, but it works. Makes for interesting trips out and about when we take the chickens with us, considering we don't live in a rural area. Imagine going through the McDonald's or Starbuck's drive through. The chickens have even gone on drives with us, like 6-8 hr round trip, and the one won't poop in the car, she waits til we stop for a break to let them and the dogs out for potty breaks. The also have a custom harness that has changeable poop pouches built in, which is a lot more comfortable for them, and easier for us.
Now that I've exposed my level of weird , I'm going to.
Interesting. Do you show your chickens?I had a guy stop one day in a parking lot and ask if his daughter could take a pic of the one I had with me at the time. We also took one to private training with the person who did the training classes at Petsmart.
