Ok I'm going to go on a little rant here. Has to do with breeders.

As many of you might already have this same feature set up on eggbid. Like those of you who do, I get an email from eggbid with it's auctions of intrest to me. Lately I have noticed a seller posting hatching eggs from "Hattrick" and "other noted" lines. Claiming in the Auction title that these are "Hattrick" silkies.

Ok I want to get something straight. If you breed one person's silkie line.. with another silkie line.. its no longer any of those two lines. It's a new line all together. I HATE it when people say "Oh well all my birds are such and such's line." when they have like 4 or 5 different lines all cramed in together, mixing it all up.

These breeders worked hard to claim a line. They don't need people using their success, as a tool to get sales. If someone who doesn't know anything about the original breeder's line, sees some piss poor silkies hatching out looking like crap cause they got all scrambled up in other lines, then it will make a bad reputation for the original breeder's line.

If I could report on eggbid about this issue I would. But it seems eggbid doesn't give a hoot.

Name it after your own line! Then when the birds come out looking like crap people can't blame it on the person's name your using! They can blame it on you! And you wonder why they don't show any photos of all the birds they gather the eggs from. Just one of the "Noted line" hens. Cause they likely are all total FAIL.

I only see where he says his roosters are 100% Hattrick. He can say that if they are can't he?

Oh, I know what you mean. That bugs me when people do that. Trying to sell their eggs/birds using another established breeders name.

If you want Hattrick, then buy from Hattrick. If you want KD Silkies, purchase directly from KD Silkies. There is no guarantee that the line you are buying comes from those breeders.

I know that there are people claiming Hattrick lines when they are not, however, I did have Ameraucanas that were from Cree lines, on one side of the family, which is exactly what I said they were. The other side was from elsewhere. I looked at his ad. He used Hattrick in the title to catch attention, but then said that his males were Hattrick, but the hens were from other lines. I don't see anything wrong with that myself, unless I'm misunderstanding something here. Could he be lying? Certainly. But he doesn't claim all Hattrick lines. I'm not sure how mentioning the lineage is a problem, as long as it's true.

I just won't buy from them. Line to me dosen't mean much. unless it's the line breeder I'm buying from, if someone asking a big price becouse of line, how do you know they are that line.

In his description he does say that his males are hattrick, but he doesn't have any photos of these males, and hattrick asks anyone who sells anything silkie, not to ever use their name when selling. The hen posted in the photo is not the best I've ever seen either. You would think he would post pictures of the "hattrick" roosters he has if he wants to focus on his chicks decending from Hattrick lines. And he doesn't mention the lines of the hens, he could have hatchery silkies for all you know. It just really ticks me off when people use other's to make money like that. I don't find it fair to all the hard work of the breeder they are using.

Maybe it's a bit different in the chicken world than it is in the dog fancy, but in the dog fancy a person isn't typically considered to have his or her own line until he or she has bred several generations and their dogs start to take on certain identifiable features based on what that person is breeding for. It's not unusual to say, for example, "my dogs are from Kajun-Fox, Windy Acres, and Jacob's lines," or "I'm starting a line from Bay Toys and Stardust lines," or something like "my stud is a Kajun-Fox dog, but my girl is from my own lines." After all, my dogs didn't come from the ether and it seems polite to acknowledge the people who put the work into the breed before me. On the other hand, I don't claim the 30+ years that Bay Toys has been in existence or the 50+ years behind Windy Acres as my own, either. Just some food for thought--not all claims of lines are necessarily nefarious.
