I am surprised that eggs get nasty in pockets while the eggs up on my shelf sits there for years didn't get rotted, they would just dry out and all is left is a dried out rubber ball of a yolk if you do ended up breaking it. I've got unopened eggs for five years now and there is no smell.
I wonder if it was the temp fluxes in the house? My dad was adamant on not using the AC. So, we used the attic fan for ventilation. It could be 110* outside and Dad would still be using the attic fan. The humidity went WAY up in the house also. It was still cooler than sitting in the shade outside, but I do so love my AC...
