Ok, Small, quiet, friendly ducks? Do they exist?

I have mini-ducks from Holderreads. Pr. Silver Appleyards, Overbergs, and Silkies.(color varities)All if handled are pretty tame. The ducks more so than the drakes, but I find that in all my ducks, seems the drakes are more skiddish and the girls get underfoot. Some of them can be loud. The mini silver Appleyard was the noisest duck. But the Overbergs on make racket when broody and chasing away other ducks.

Muscovy ducks are quite and friendly[ ducks not drakes] and the ducks aren't that big.

Aren't muscovy ducks quiet too? They don't quack? I wasnt a fan of their appearance at first, but the noise factor is important to me...

We have chickens now and my girls were considering doing a duck project for 4H next year...but we haven't narrowed down a breed. Just poking around and reading what others think.

Quiet, yes.. don't quack? that is not true... the drakes mainly hiss, the hens/ducks(whatever) makes various noises which do include a quack now & again, but it's mostly peeping, trilling and a few other sounds that are difficult to describe. Generally, speaking they are considered one of the most quiet breeds though. The girls don't really have much in the way of the fleshy red markings on the faces those are reserved for the drakes that is usually what turns people off of them at least basing on appearance.

Here is some good examples of the difference between the drakes and the ducks in their appearance
http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/Ducks/Musc/BRKScobies.html Both my drakes and my ducks are very friendly and quiet, about the only time we know they are around is in the early morning when I first let everyone out they all have to greet each other but not with quacking.

Thanks! I believe that too! its just i need to get one that is good for my area. At first I thought I was definitely getting buffs, but then I discovered more breeds and now I'm stuck!!!

I hear ya! They're all so cute that its so hard to make a decision!
Please let us know when you do!!!!

Thank you Miss Lydia and Going Quackers. I was thinking "no quacking" with the Muscovy ducks sounded a little "off" which is why I asked. My girls are thinking of doing ducks next year for 4H. Would any of you have any breed suggestions? Like I said, the noise factor is one consideration. We have land, but are still in the city limits, and we can't have anything that makes TOO much noise. We have 3 small bantam hens currently and will probably be getting 2 more over the summer. Suggestions?

I was put off by the Muscovy at first but everyone who owns them seems to love them!

The muscovy is not a small duck though, they are rather large.

I have welsh harlequins right now and they are very quiet. They are a medium sized duck.

I had runners and let me tell you, along with call ducks, they can wake the dead.......

I think you'd like
'scovies the girls are not that big, i mean i can tuck one under my arm and I am not a big person at all.. This is a pic of my dusty with her 3wk old.. you'll see she isn't all that large and face really barely has fleshy red ... I'm in the country but i think they make a good, solid(not delicate meaning) relatively quiet duck. Forage very well and aren't flighty all my girls are full flight none are clipped... they all stay around.

All ducks are really loud, it doesn't matter what size, they can all really blast out the loud noise. All the small breeds are reduced in size but not in volume. Calls were deliberately developed to be extremely loud and noisy.

Muscovy ducks are relatively quiet. They aren't really ducks, even though they are called ducks. The females aren't huge like the males are and they can be social if they get enough attention.

Really, ducks would not be my recommendation for some one that needs a small and very quiet pet. Think about getting a rabbit, instead.
