But then, my house looks like Africa and/or Haiti blew up and landed here.
Jayembe sort of sounds like Djembe (African drum) - which is probably why folks think it sounds African. (I have four Djembes of differing sizes - I love the sounds they make.)
I have Haitian art all over the place, too - a lot of it is African-ish.
