Splayed leg has varying degrees. If a chick is able to grip the pad then even if it
has a slight case it can recover or grow out of it quicker. It won't prevent it
but it may help it.

Keep in mind I have only had 6 hatches so far so I am talking completely out
of my, well, you know. I'm hoping the pros jump in here.

I let mine run for 24 hours before placing my eggs that way you can make sure that the temp is running steady.

OKie if you put it in a closet make sure the closet is an inner closet your house looks at lot like mine and the closets here just don't work with all the cold winds. Have fun your gonna be a great chickie mom.

THanks PC. I don't know if you remember but I lost a chick out of my last hatch due to splayed leg. I will be getting some gripping paper (what is that stuff called??) before day 18 this time just in case!

Spraddle leg happens when newly hatched chicks are not kept on the right surfaces when first hatched...they need something to be able to grip their feet on..they slip and slide causing their legs to splay out from under them....newspapers are very bad for this to happen... most put down paper towels or old bath towels and webbed shelf liner like Speck says for a few days then add shavings underneath that and then take away the paper towels or bath towels in a week or so...Sometimes you can catch it in time by putting a bandaid treatment on them, some times it takes awhile and some don't get better...

I'm breathing a sigh of relief now that I see all these friendly faces, well avatars,
in here.


I completely agree with letting the temps stabilize but 2 things that I take into
consideration with Okie's 9200 is:

1-It never spiked on me and it was used for 2 hatches
2-Once she opens it and puts in all those eggs it's a start over anyways.
The mass of those eggs will stabilize and slow the temp rise.


Okie, whenever the eggs go in you want to be around as much as possible to
check on the temps. I'm not talking every 2 minutes, more like very 30 minutes
to an hour just to peek in.

I check my Octagon every chance I get.
