***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I had no idea that's what the disease was. While I know chickens aren't carnivores like hawks, etc I guess I thought they ate the same kind of meat as carnivores given the fact they'll scarf down rodents and snakes every chance they get. The biggest problem I'm having is all the main chicken feeds are all plant proteins. Seriously-think of how easy it is to raise BUGS. Why don't they have animal feed made of insect protein? Crickets, grasshoppers, etc. That would be perfect for chickens and also for the fish I keep. The 3 month olds I've got don't seem to physically be able to get enough food in them eating the starter/grower crumbles to feel full. Maybe the answer is supplementing with eggs and catfood/dogfood. Something that will stay in their stomachs long enough so they don't have to eat non-stop? Not sure what the answer is.

We have tried the feeds without animal protien, they aren't as good and teh birds do not grow as well. Bovine meat and meal was banned from use in teh manufacture of feed. Chickens are not herbavores, they need animal protien to grow and develop properly, they will get this in a free range environment from bugs, mice, snakes, and everything thing that moves that they can catch. However a properly balanced sole source feed will include animal protien. Most feed manufacturers such as Purina, evergreen, US Suppliers etc. The big boys that have R&D departments understand what is needed and offer thier less expensive plant protien only feeds and they have thier premium feeds which contain animal protien often fish meal, porcine, and bone meal. This is and can be scienticically proven both safe and better for the Omnivore diet. Herbavores such as cattle, sheep, and goats should never be fed anything with animal protien though..

It's finally raining here...we got in just in time! Will post pics after supper what we've been doing

No chickens are not herbivores but they are not carnivores like hawks either. They do need some type of animal protein but the concern is that most dog foods that everyone is using to feed their chickens contains chicken.

Oops, good point. I think I'll go with the idea of canned fish and boiled eggs along with the animal protein feed in Shawnee.

Quick question. I have searched and cant find this issue. I am in Broken Arrow.

Sec. 5-11. Restriction on location of stables, kennels, coops, etc.
(a) It shall be unlawful and a class B offense for any person to maintain any stable, dog kennel, chicken coop, dovecote, rabbit warren, yard or other establishment wherein animals are kept closer than 40 feet from any tenement or apartment house, hotel, restaurant, boarding house, retail food store, building used for educational, religious or hospital purposes, or residence other than that occupied by the owner or occupant of the premises upon which such animal is kept.

Sec. 5-22. Keeping of animals other than dogs and cats.
(a) It shall be unlawful and a Class B offense for any person to allow or permit any poultry, including but not limited to chickens, roosters, turkeys, pigeons, ducks or geese within 150 feet of any dwelling, house trailer, hotel, motel, grocery store, supermarket, food service establishment, or school except in a duly established agricultural district. Racing pigeon lofts kept in good condition and registered with the American Racing Pigeon Union are excepted from this section.

Ok so correct me if I am wrong.....I can have a chicken coop within 40ft of a residence but the chickens can not be withing 150 ft... This makes no sense, hopefully someone else has approaced this already

well, we suppliment our flocks with dog or cat kibble, they love it and it gives them a boost in protein- the other suggestion would be raise your own insects- mealworms are very easy to raise....

ok, the way i am reading it, the first one appears to be referring to housing, dwelling. being 40 feet- they mention apartments, but not residence... the second one is referring to any dwelling unless agricultural zoned... kind of confusing, needs to be clarified
