***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Let's see if I can kill a thread. Not my intent, mind you, but it just seems to happen whenever I post.

Here goes.

Last week I went down to the lake house at Lake Eufaula to check out the fire damage and meet with the insurance adjuster. It's bad but not as bad as it could have been because it was contained to the exterior. It's a mobile home, so all of the skirting and most of the siding on one side and about 3/4 of the back is either melted completely off or warped. All of that will have to be replaced along with miscellaneous items that were in the back. The entire back yard and wooded side lot are completely burnt up. There was no damage to the front of the house. Several trees will need to be cut down. Some are/were some very nice oak and hickory trees. Due to the diligence of several neighbors who saw the fire and came to help rake leaves before the fire department arrived, there is a lot less damage than there could have been. I'm so thankful they were there and willing to help out. They were all given thank you notes and packages of homemade brownies and cookies.

Inside I discovered all sorts of plumbing problems unrelated to the fire. The plumber came out and got all of that fixed after two visits. I had to spend one night in a hotel in McAlester because of the leaks. The carpet will need to be replaced in every room. I did the best I could soaking up the water with towels, drying them, repeating.

After all that, I did manage to cut down 8-10 small trees that were growing in the wrong places, raked all the leaves in the front and burned what I could before the burn ban went back into effect. Trimmed some dead branches off the bigger trees as high up as I could reach (not very high though because I'm only 5 ft tall without a ladder.)

I tripped over a large rock that got in my way and messed up my ankle, my whole body aches and I smell like Ben-Gay, but got a lot done. All in all I feel like it was a successful trip even though I didn't get to fish at all. Sure enjoyed the nice fall weather though.

It is wonderful to hear that your neighbors helped you out! Glad the damage wasn't what it could have been. Now didn't you say this fire was started by a neighbor who left their fire smoldering?

Yes, someone who recently bought a couple of lots nearby was trying to burn brush on his property. He left while some of the area was still smoldering and the fire re-ignited and spread. He said he thought it would put itself out.

My sister works with Dr. Zinn and she was telling me just the other day what a great chicken (bird) vet he is. She was rattling off chicken dr stuff she'd learned from him. lol She's a lg animal vet, so I was impressed she'd picked up so much chicken info from him. At least I know if I need one, there's a good chicken vet close by, and maybe a ride to the clinic if need be.

Hope your baby continues her recovery.

He clearly suffered some sort of common sense deficiency but don't know if it was alcohol related.

I have had good luck getting seed in bulk at Ross Seed in Chickasha. They are very reasonably priced and I bought a lot of seed there this past Spring for our church's garden.

From the pics on Facebook ,it looks like our Warrior Friend,Doc had a near miss with a tree that fell on him and his tractor! Renia said he is okay but they are watching him to make sure! Glad your okay Doc.

Getting ready to go to a pegion meet. Its not the same since I don't have any pigeons anymore. But still have great friends that do!.

We aquirred a new pet today. Its a calico kitten. She is really sweet and tame. Hope she works out with the Taco dog. So far so good.

Oh lord, you're kidding?! That makes me feel even better! I've read chicken stuff literally for hours and hours, that kind of stuff is really interesting to me. He was rattling stuff off and explaining things left and right. He gave me LS-50 powder to put in their water as the only water they get for the next 10 days. The little Cochin pullet's temp was normal today-105. I'm so thrilled she's going to live and the others will be ok. Yet feel so bad about the black pullet.
And while I've got someone's attention...........

Another thing I mentioned was how I was feeding them fish and various stuff for meat protein. He said *not to do that. He said the reason for that is to grow chickens out as fast as possible for slaughter. That people with PET chickens want longevity, not fast maturity. He said grains, grains, grains. And that alfalfa is one of the best sources of protein and especially fiber. He said all chickens would be better off if people would leave alfalfa in their pens for them, either the pelleted form or hay form. He also said while chicken scratch isn't good for their sole source of food it's excellent for them fed in addition to their regular pelleted feed. So I stopped and got 50 lbs of scratch & a 50 lb bag of 100% alfalfa pellets and mixed them 50/50. The birds went absolutely nuts. They scarfed up a bunch of it and laid around like a bunch of men after Thanksgiving dinner preening themselves. I got some frisbees at walmart y-day for 50 cents each. I'm going to leave their chicken pellets out 24/7 like always and give each set of birds a frisbee full of the grain/alfalfa mix every day.

Not to mention all the stuff that can be tracked home to our birds on our feet. I'm so incredibly careful about things you can SEE-like mites and lice, sneezing, quarrantine. It's the things you can't see that can kill them, too. My husband had a great idea and I'm going to do this-get some of those rubber clogs at the dollar store and hang a pair at the door of each pen along with hand sanitizer while I have babies under 6-7 months. After I'm done 'visiting' in that pen I can hang the clogs up outside the door and put my regular shoes on and clean my hands before the next pen. It may not cut down on 100% of everything but it'll cut down on over 90%.
