***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Sad to report that ImaJean has gone over the Rainbow Bridge. ImaJean was always the first to come eat out of my hand and had such a sweet personality. The two other Delaware hens are the same size and temperament. ..but not as personable.

After checking her several times and feeling no more movement, I felt what I thought was another egg. Since the first "egg" was still in the oviduct and not moving forward I called the vet and my MIL. She has raised 1500 chickens in a flock to produce and sell eggs back in the day. Both said that I would need to cull her. Vet suggested that I perform a necropsy. Here is what was found...next to a normal sized hen egg for comparison. The lump in the upper left was what I thought was the huge egg. These growths were all inside the oviduct tube so it looks like ImaJean has been in trouble for a long time before symptoms appeared. Her crop was full and her gizzard and liver were normal. Her heart was smaller and soft.

Just goes to show, you need to handle your birds often and be aware of changes in behavior.
When everyone goes to the roost tonight, I'm going to slip in and check any that I have not seen in the nest boxes this week.

I had a ingroud pool cover that I used as shade cloth this yr. -- it is awesome since it is way stronger than shade cloth & has spring loaded clamps already on it - the springs help it have little give so it doesnt get distroyed in the wind. Doubled the pool cover- wrapped it on the corner of the pen & no wind comes through. My peafowl were really enjoying it yesterday. It looks ugly to see the big green fabric covering the corner of the pen but I will sacrifice my own happiness for their warmth.

I'm really hoping they are wrong about the frost, my garden is so beautiful and I'm still harvesting a lot of veggies!!!! And I just now have a few tomatos, but they are still young and green!

I am freezing too, I keep going out to mow the grass and keep finding reasons (some would say excuses) to go back in out of the cold! This may be the year ................................. that I freeze smooth to death!!!!! I threaten every year, but this may be it. I soooooo want to move to the equator!

My supper isn't in the crock pot, but it is on the stove, pork stew and corn bread. Smells really good.

Stew & corn bread sounds really good! I think I will start something else in the crock pot tonight, might just be stew too!

You & I both may freeze to death! The only reason I don't have my desk heater on is because I don't want the guys to give me crap!

Nana sorry about ImaJean!

At least she isn't in pain anymore, and you KNOW there was nothing you could have done.
