Sad to report that ImaJean has gone over the Rainbow Bridge. ImaJean was always the first to come eat out of my hand and had such a sweet personality. The two other Delaware hens are the same size and temperament. ..but not as personable.
After checking her several times and feeling no more movement, I felt what I thought was another egg. Since the first "egg" was still in the oviduct and not moving forward I called the vet and my MIL. She has raised 1500 chickens in a flock to produce and sell eggs back in the day. Both said that I would need to cull her. Vet suggested that I perform a necropsy. Here is what was found...next to a normal sized hen egg for comparison. The lump in the upper left was what I thought was the huge egg. These growths were all inside the oviduct tube so it looks like ImaJean has been in trouble for a long time before symptoms appeared. Her crop was full and her gizzard and liver were normal. Her heart was smaller and soft.
Just goes to show, you need to handle your birds often and be aware of changes in behavior.
When everyone goes to the roost tonight, I'm going to slip in and check any that I have not seen in the nest boxes this week.
