Greetings Okies,

We’ve made some progress in our planning of the North East Oklahoma Chicken Stock. I will post reminders now and then, but all the big talk about the event will take place on the planning thread. There’s a link in my signature line.

Date: Saturday, June 16, 2012 - Sun-up to sundown

Location: Muskogee Fair Grounds, Muskogee, OK. The swine building just south of the round fair office building is reserved for the event.

Pay the Seller Poultry Sale (P.S.P.S.) starts at 12 noon. We’ll line up the cages starting at 11:00.

Food: We will have a concession table to allow more people to play rather than work during the event. Details soon.

Demonstrations: We need talented folks to sign up for 30 minute demos. If you want to share your expertise in canning, quilting, cage building, gardening, etc., please let me know. If you’re shy but knowledgable, a static display would be awesome. Let me know about that too so that I can reserve a place for you to set up.

Raffle: We will have a raffle of donated items to pay for the rental of the facility and for our licensed and bonded security person(s) for the event. I’m going to start a list, so please let me know if you are able to donate something for the raffle. You can post on the planning thread or send me a PM.

I've also filled out the reservation request form for the BYC banner. I will let everyone know if we get a confirmed reservation for the banner.

Thanks, but I will likely just end up getting one off CL, can get a bird, cage, food etc.... for a good price.

We have one hatched so far today under Nasty Nesty Nellie out in the hottub room where I moved her 11/30.

Robyn, I've only had three times in my years of raising chickens that I have had maggots in a broodie nest box. This is one of those times. NNN is one of those hens who won't leave her eggs when she broods. Her nest box was pretty nasty when I moved her into a clean cardboard box nest on day 16 when I candled the eggs . She got a butt bath then because of caked poop on her bottom. She had 18 eggs under her then and when I candled she only got 12 back. I moved the brushed eggs onto rice bags heated in the microwave and covered with a towel while I bathed her. I was leaving her in the barn then.
After the one chick died and I moved her into the hottub room, I checked the bedding and eggs. This time, NNN had a few maggots in the poop...they were maggots not worms. So this time, I used diluted oxine water and a soft cloth to clean off the soiled eggs and kept them warm, bathed her bottom again and put her in the same box after pulling out any soiled hay and replacing it with some fresh hay. This was two days ago and we have a hatch going on.
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Once the babies are hatched and dry, I will pull out that nest box and put in a pile of hay at one end inside the water tank. I have two inches of pine shavings on the bottom of the 6 x 2 foot stock tank already. I don't want babies getting lost beside or behind a cardboard box and getting chilled.

I swear by heated rice bags.
When I picked up the CW baby from Carl and Stephanie yesterday, I heated three rice bags in the microwave for 2 minutes each and wrapped them in a towel and placed those inside one of those thermal canvas carriers and zipped it closed while I ran errands. Later when I put the chick in, I left the lid unzipped for the ride home so baby could breathe. Baby stayed nice and comfy.

Hubby is trying to convince me that since she is hatching now, NNN will take the CW and MJ's banty chick to raise with hers. I'm not convinced and will keep the two separate for brooding out.

Robin, it's probably not maggots but lice. Lice look exactly like little maggots, that'd be my 1st thought. Especially beings you found it on the egg.
These little tiny bantam Cochins certainly live up to being broody, don't they?? The little red one I've got just started laying 3 days ago and this morning there she was-perched up on her egg keeping the other 2 chickens away from her and covering herself with hay. I did take her egg although after about 4 seconds it didn't seem to bother her.
Robin, one of the little Cochin bantams I got from you started laying yesterday, too. The cutest little tiny brown egg!
