He is actually a real dark blue mottled, the photo just makes him look black. He had blue shading on some feathers, showing him to be blue.. I have a pumpkin mottled pullet and a blue mottled pumpkin hen I can put him with.

I could've sworn I'd answered this and couldn't find it so guess I didn't. But this would be great fun for me to do it that way. I'd get the enjoyment of gathering up some more Orloff girls and I'll look hard for a good looking boy. I'll get to have the birds, help the breed in some small way but not have to deal with getting attached to babies or worry about what to do with all the extra boys. If I find any males I'll run them by you since I really don't know what to look for.
Poco, the sling your granddaughter made is ingenious lol
Matt, that bird is beautiful. I don't envy you having to separate them all though. I'm not so sure I'll be able to put any girls in with the boy I've got, he was pretty mean to both groups I tried. Maybe it's just a teenager thing though.

Most cockerels can get a little over zealous when they start being interested in females, i told you about that when you were here the other day.

I understand that. All cockerels are over zealous when they're teenagers, this wasn't over zealousness. He's so new he quite possibly just doesn't want ANYone new in with him right now. He just needs time to adjust to a new place and not free ranging. I can't let him loose to free range because I'm pretty sure the 1st thing he'd do is jump into the other 2 yards that have a rooster and hens in them and I'm not going to risk someone getting hurt.
(The other 2 yards/fenced areas I'm talking about are mine, I didn't mean neighbors or anything).

Have you got your flock up and going yet?
I guess it wouldn't be nice to tell you it was in the mid 60s in OKC today

Do not add new birds during the daytime, wait until they are on the roost and go place the new bird in the middle of all the others on the roost, come morning they are all fine no issues even works when adding males just place the new male next to the other male.

I wondered if that really worked, I've heard it several times. It'd be my luck they'd kill the new one at the break of dawn. When I get the pullets from you I'm going to do it different and add 1 of the current ones to them and wait 3 or 4 days and then add another then another and then add the cockerel. I think the ones that have been here a few wks are already feeling overly confidant and comfortable enough to defend their territory (or however chickens do it).
The little Dun hen is such a favorite of mine that I'd just as soon she stay where she's at, they're all so sweet in that pen. I hold her in my hand and she tilts her head sideways and stares at me, who couldn't love that?? lol
Robin, your Galahad is gorgeous! He almost looks like a silvery white. How on earth do you get all those boys to get along? I have mine all separated and they live with their hatchmates they grew up with. They don't play well with others outside of their group.

I was nervous putting my OEGB in with my other chickens because they're so much bigger, and they were all raised together. I was surprised that they just seemed to ignore her at first. I did it at night. The first few nights we went out and put her in the pile they all lay in to keep warm, because they made her stay outside. After about three days she was like one of the gang. Of course they are all hens (I'm pretty sure) and there were only four out there. Good luck!

RetireedArmyWife, that makes me feel better then if you had good luck with it.
And isn't this amazing how these guys grow? This is the same chicken right after she was born and then about a week ago. I just can't believe how fast they grow up.
