***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Guy's tip of the day
I was at Atwoods in Clinton some time back and bought some feed. Got it home and opened the first bag to dump in the barrel. As I poured I noticed some coming out as chunks (it was the all flock pellets) so I stopped pouring and examined the chunks to find that the feed had gotten wet at some point and had lots of mold in these chunks. I opened the other bag and saw the same thing. I disposed of both bags and started looking for other places to buy feed. Since then I have gone thru a few other places until I got to where I am now with my feed. Point I am trying to get across is do not feed moldy feed to your flock. It is a shortcut to disaster. Moldy feed can cause Aspergillosis, and other problems. Some of the things to look for, gasping, and accelerated breathing may be present. increased thirst, and diarrhea in the later stages. It seems to effect confined chickens much more than free range. I used Atwoods feed as my example, but moldy feed can come from anywhere or even occur in your feed barrels if moisture is allowed to make contact. As I high as feed is I know it is tempting to just take out the chunks and feed the remaining. You might get by with this forever, but as for me, I'm not going to chance it in my flock.

That is so true. I've had that happen as well. I'm sure many others have too. Personally, I take mine back to where I got it. They will either give you new bags, (What I look at before loading) or give your money back.
I've done the same thing with extremely buggy feed

Beautiful roo Cuban! Do you have hens to go with him? You can tell he's a big guy just by the size of his legs. Are they a friendly, calm breed?

Thanks! I actually have 4 males and 9 females, all are of a breedable age. They are pretty calm up until feed time.

They are friendly too. This guy gets a little onery every now and then but I think it's his living quarters. He's currently in what most folk call a stag pen, a little 4 x 4 hoop top.

DH just called. The group is on the bus and headed for D.C. He's calling back later, once the chaos and mayhem ends. Right now the bus is filled with boisterous teens.

The hen turned out great. I basted every 20 minutes, so the skin is crunchy perfection. I had foil over the breast for the last 30 minutes, so all the white meat is tender and moist. I made gravy and mashed potatoes to go with the roast chicken, so leftovers will go into the freezer for later in the week. Maybe I'll hold the white meat for chicken salad. I can eat chicken salad there times a day and not get tired of it.

I should have trussed the bird, but I used up all my string making Thanksgiving turkeys this year. Breath in!!!!!

Delicious looking! Wish I had the patience to pluck a bird.
