***OKIES in the BYC III ***

How many do you have these days??? How are your chickens?

I have abour 150 now but will process all but what i plan to keep for breeders. The chickens are doing good i put lights on a timer to come on about 330 am and now getting about 25 to 30 eggs a day . they had dropped to about 6 or 8 eggs a dat until i installed the timer lights.. Still need to get more pens built so i can seperate the hens into each breed so i can start hatching some pure bred .. the only ones i have seperated is the barnevelders i got from Poco.. i plan to hatch some from them as i really like them and love the dark eggs ..I have my little quad of BBReds and plan on hatching some this spring..

upcdayz, I hope you feel better. I get a headache about every 2 yrs and I've had one now for like a week. So I wonder if there's some low-grade flu thing going around or something.
Robin, I'm reading about the roaches and they need like 90 degrees to breed. They can't fly, jump or climb so they don't escape even without a cover. Even if they do they wouldn't be able to breed in a house because it isn't warm enough for them. They're actually kind of cool and I'm really kicking myself for not paying enough attention all this time when Kass was talking about them.
Here's one of the pet quality OEGB I got from Jarvis's, does anyone know what color she is? Maybe Carl will hop on and let me know. She's just a little darling, chatters non-stop at me and is 1/2 the size of my Serama boy.

She was a cross of two varieties for type improvement but that cross did not work out nearly as well as teh other one. they were neat colored though.

Robin - Thanks for the links. I can play all the files on the first site, but I get errors on the second. Maybe I don't have the right software.

i had to download them from the second, rather than play them....

just got 'the call' on my silky roo, she was going to deliver him, but that wouldn't be till 4, so hubby is on his way, when i asked her if he was doing ok, she said he was crowing! so i guess he is fine?LOL!

Thanks for the welcome, we live just north of Harrah but we attend church south of Choctaw so are that direction once a week. I work in Shawnee so there 3 days a week and one day a week I work around the 240/Western area. We are looking for barred rock pullets (3), then one australorp roo, one buff orphington roo.

Another question, what does everyone feed their chickens and guineas? I feed mine table scraps and the guineas free range all day, then we leave a mix of fancy scratch and egg layer pellets avail all day for the chickens and the guineas get a mix left for them when they come in at night. I just want to make sure I am not over feeding or not feeding them the right things. My hens are picky about what they eat they love leftover oatmeal but don't care for cream of wheat, lol.

Cathie

Welcome Cathie, I am a
neighbor sort of, I live south of Choctaw. There were several Barred rock pullets for sale at the Riverchest auction last Friday night. It is just East and south of Harrah. It is held on the first and third Fridays of the month and begins at 5:30. The next one there is Feb. 3. The Blanchard auction is this Saturday. Therte are usually lots of birds at Mary's Swap Meet in Midwest City on Saturday. One of our good friends on here Michael Daugherty is usually there. Pat Drew who runs the auction in Harrah is almost always at Mary's with birds as well.

I need advice! MY husband surprised me with 15 1 day old Australorp chicks yesterday. I currently have them setup in a plastic crate in my laundry room with appropariate water, food and a heat lamp. They made it thru last night so I am staying hopeful! I changed out the paper towels, and water this morning and trying to keep my two year old from loving them to death. My husband wants to go out of town the weekend Friday and Saturday night and states the chicks will be fine, I disagree. Last weekend he forgot to ask our neighbor to collect eggs so I had to throw away four eggs and my hen hasn't layed a egg since. I don't think the chicks will be okay, please advise. THANK YOU! I am so glad I found this forum, I'm not on here as much as I would like to be!

If you have them in a warm room tht will help as heatlamps have a habit of blowing a bulb while you are gone.. heat is the main thing they need at this age.. as long as you have a feeder full of feed and plenty of water to last till you return i think they would be ok.. i often leave for the weekend with chicks or quail in the brooder and dont have any problems...i do keep my brooders in a warm room for the first few weeks after hatching...
