***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Ksane these are Cochins
A pure breed baby from Delilah and Samson

This one looks just like my babies when they hatched. Lordy, I love my Cochins. Mine came from Blue/Blue breeding also. The darkest one is black with gray underneath, I've never see the color before. But he was a tad lighter than the one in this picture so I'll bet the one in this picture is going to be a real pretty black. They're so precious.
I put the tiny OEGB in with my Silkie girls today, she's been inside because everyone beats the feathers off of her (none of the OEGB get along lol!) But the Silkie girls took her right in, I knew they would. She's snuggled up with them in their building right now. I'm having rotten luck getting these OEGBs to co-exist. I got the 2 groups at different times and it's looking like I'm going to have to have 2 separate living areas for them.

Been a long busy day hard to believe how nice this weather is little chill in the wind but couldn't ask for better for the end of January
I
picked up 5 new Welsummer hens at Blanchard so getting them into a coop and pen for a few days then Roscco will join them with the other two hens I hatched from my POOPS eggs

Thanks for the Roo Mike, some food and water and he was much better already,

Several BYC'ers there, always a pleasure to rub elbows with the Chicken Elite,
I didn't see any cackleberries I just had to have so the bator will sit empty a while yet although I did gather 11 out of my BO pen I will have all I can set of them real quick at this rate, I was only getting one or two a day and a lot of days I got zip LOL

I am looking for someone(s) to help me build a chicken coop(s)...as raccoon/skunk/coyote proof as possible...within my budget.
I am also looking for free materials on my local FreeCycle.org group but so far no replies.

I live about 8 miles West of Purcell near the Woody Chapel store.

Congrats on the hatches this weekend! We will have to post every couple of weeks to compare growth.

So I picked up babies today at The Jarvis Enablishment...brought home a bunch of cute fluffybutts. Three are still in the hatcher. They have pipped, but the others were running and jumping and rolling them around till they were too dizzy to zip.
Will have to get a count when they are all asleep but I think there are 36 in the tank. Carl gave me a tiny 2 week old Blue d'Anvers and it is smaller than the day old babies!! It's already a snuggler.
The babies are Cochin (Blue, Splash), Columbian Wyandotte, Silver Laced Wyandotte and crosses of the Cochin roo and CW roo with my Australorp, Blue Wyandotte, hatcher BLRW splash, Delaware, Red SexLink and Minorca hens
Took a few pictures:
The Blue d'Anvers says" I'm older, but they are bigger"

If we keep moving guys, she won't be able to count us!

They ran til they dropped...this one is down ofr the count!

So far the only Iowa egg to hatch. There are two more pipped in the hatcher.

We wanted to give BanjoeJoe's new birds a run for their fluff...we have tiny fluffy butts, but they are mighty fluffy.

Thirty snoozing babies..there are some Blues in the bunch and Cochins, but you can't see their feet.
Too adorable!

How big of a coop were you wanting? If you are going to have a small number of birds an "A" frame like Carl makes would be plenty good for them. With some reinforcement they can be made very secure.

As far as materials go for a larger coop think free pallets, they can be screwed together and covered with plywood or tin. The fencing for a run is what is going to be the costly item.

Those were nice Welsummers. Did you leave early. I saw some chickens that came in late that looked like Barred Rocks, including a roo. I went looking for you but couldn't find you and we left at about 9:15 so I don't know what they sold for.

It was a very nice day, cool in the morning but I got alot done. I started at 8:30 in my pens; moving birds around, fresh bedding and food and water. Then after lunch I helped Jack set up breeding pens. Got to catch alot of birds. Marans Welsummers and even Americaunas sure are bigger and faster than my Cochins.

WOW lots to post about today. Last night we did go to the auction in Blanchard. Didn't see any POOPs shirts but did meet a few people that were a wealth of knowledge. Hubby said we will be going to that auction again. We ended up bringing home everything but what we went for, lol. I ended up with a trio of Golden Salmon Marans (one of the hens blessed us with a beautiful dark brown egg already today), a pair of Blue Splash Marans, and two little who knows what roosters. They aren't tiny but they aren't big, I think they may be banty roosters, they have feather feet. I bought them because they were cute, lol. Plus I figure for $2.25 each I couldn't go wrong.

We spent the day getting phase 2 of the "Chicken Suites" finished. So now I have a pen for my trio, my pair of Blue Splash and then a big coop and yard for all my layers. Now to finish the broody pen next weekend. It will be my cuckoo maran pen until I need it for broodies.

So still looking for 3 barred rock pullets or hens, a buff orphingon roo, a black australorp roo, and possibly some black cooper marans.

Oh and we met a wonderful man Jack at the auction that was super sweet and taught me alot about marans. We are slowly learning and hope to have our little chicken farm going by spring so we can hatch some eggs.

Sorry we didn't get to meet last night. Lost of BYC folks sit at the tables in the back. Those little roos were cute. I think they are Cochins or Cochin crosses. Thats my breed. They will be mellow roosters. I'm Jack's neighbor. He doesn't get on line but I'll tell him you mentioned him. He has lots of nice Black Copper marans and will be selling some soon.
