***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Last yr I suspected my peahen lays her eggs in her sleep. Even the egg we found last wk was near the roost. They have a perch the sit on during the day & above that is a higher roost. Today I found an egg broken on the perch. Guessing she laid it while roosting & it hit the perch. My peacock was displaying when I was checking on them. His lady went behind him & ran inside the house for cover. Think she is saying she isn't interested.
Guess we will take the perch away-- or make it smaller -- think it is 2x8 right now. Would hate for all her eggs to end up broken!

I have an asil hen that sleeps inside a small house in hay on the floor. She always lays after she goes in after dark. I always go out a couple hours after dark and get her egg so it doesnt freeze when she gets off of it in the morning.

She's lonely alright. Hangs in front of the door to where the others are making some crying noise lol But won't let me get close enough to nab her.

We had one like that but sadly it ended badly for him. He went missing one night and we never found him. They are difficult to catch even when in a coop, lol.

I don't know if anyone is looking but there is a GQF Incubator with trays and egg trays, with a brooder on the OKC Craigslist for 275.. That would be a very good deal if anyone needed either.

Robin, get US Orps instead of UK Orps. I bet you wouldn't be able to tell the difference and you'd love them all the same :)

Well she stays in the layers yard or the Faverolles yard, she sure doesn't go wandering now when all her buds are shut up in a pen.
I was putting the 3 boys in a crate yesterday in order to try to lure the 2 girls into the pen and accidently yanked the tail feathers right out of one of the boys. So now I have noisy sad Guineas and one has a bald butt.

put the guineas you have in a cage inside the pen, then leave the pen gate open and watch the straggler. she should go into the pen to be with the others, then just close the pen door and your done.

you must realy have a strong grip, i have grabbed them by the tail before and come away with a handful of feathers and no bird. then i had to hunt to fnd the one the feathers came from.

Robin, I would almost have to agree, the Imprted orp is just a fluffier Orpington making them appear larger. Most of the Imported orps out there have been crossed back over US based orps anyway to attempt to get closer to the standard of the Orp here in the US.
I would be very carefull if you purchase any "Imported" Orpingtons anyway as it is likely not what you are really getting unless they have the import paperwork and can document the the importation process they are likely just bumping prices for the new fad.. The folks that will spend teh time and money to import things seldom let much go until they have raised them out and choose for thier own breeding programs since it averages 4-5K a bird between bird, shipping, broker fees, and quarantine period at $20 a bird per day for 30 days.
