***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Robin - The auction begins at 6:00 p.m. It's going to be at the Wagoner County Fairgrounds in Coweta, which is by the middle school. You can google for directions. If you want to put birds in the auction, they will take them as early as noon. I'm meeting some Okies there, so you won't be alone if you decide to come to the auction.

I have hatched eggs in a simular situation as yours. I put them in a bow with a towel wrapped around it, used an old lamp and a 100 watt light bulb, put a jar of water in there for humidity, out of the ones I tried to finsh hatching I got 7 out of 11 hatched out. Did not feel like this was a bad percentage since the hen left the eggs and they were surely not going to hatch otherwise.
There's hope for me with my little foam incubator yet. Somehow I've managed to get attached to the 4 EGGS in this little test hatch. How foolish does a woman have to be to get attached to EGGS??
(Leave it, Jim.....)

Being a newbie to all this I have an opinion on this. If I buy a bird from someone I am not expecting show quality, because I don't know what to look for anyway. If I were looking for show quality then I would find somebody I am pretty sure I can trust to help me pick it out. If I pay a little bit more for a bird it will be because I personally think it will be worth it. The only time I think it would make me seriously upset would be if a child were trying to get into showing and got taken advantage of. I understand why it makes you angry. There are mostly good honest people in this chicken business and jerks make it difficult for everybody. It's just like anything else. Do your homework. You are a good, honest person, and that's why it makes you upset.

I may be relatively new to chickens but the above has been my life long attitude towards animals in general. It all depends on what your interests are. I don't understand someone paying $200 for a bird based on its looks/show quality but those same people wouldn't understand if I spent $200 on a barnyard mix chicken at the vet trying to keep it alive. We're just in it for different things, that doesn't make me wrong. Whether it's a livestock auction or chicken auction I already know what I'm willing to spend before the bidding starts. And it's a heck of a lot more than the bird's worth to a breeder/show person. The people that get taken advantage of are the ones going to an auction thinking they're going to get something for nothing. Their greed gets ahead of them and they think they can 'make some money' (I hate that phrase) breeding or selling the birds. Just like the backyard breeders in the dog world. Any breeder/shower who's doing it right isn't making any money at it. Not for the time, expense and effort they're putting into it.

Don't you guys feel sad seeing birds you've hatched and raised up on the auction table? They look so scared and alone, that's what I know I wouldn't be able to stand. I would feel so SORRY for them!

LOL

Your funny this morning. What's on tap for today & this weekend?

Well Carl is gonna help me out by hauling a cage I bought months ago and never picked up. Then if time allows, I am gonna take a few birds to drop off at the Harrah auction then I will pick up Jared and get him to his game by 5:30.
Maybe hit the swap meet on Sat morn and then basketball tomorrow afternoon and evening.
In between I will diligently be working on all of the tasks that have been laid out for me.
AND YOU?

I went to bathe the birds I had set asside to show the next two weekends.. and woudn't you know the best cockrell has started a tail molt.. Now I have to take the other one, he's not bad just not as good. I thought I had seen a gap in his tail this morning and I apparently did, when I picked up out of the coop two more came out. I guess he will sit to the side till fall, and just make more like himself if I'm lucky. Now I have to keep teh other cockrell from starting to molt too, of course that just means he doesn't get to head to Ga. till after March 4th and will make a show out there March 16, here is wishing him luck..

Lets see my weekend isn't too busy. Show tonight for DD, tomorrow I hope to get my house cleaned early so I can clean up in the garden & fix the fence, if I can get that done I will see about going to pick up a couple of bags of leaves to add.....Sunday will be church & hopefully rest.

Oh & a store somewhere in there to pick up a few more seeds.

Carl, what all do you have started as seeds right now (need to see if I am missing anything)
