Jarvis - in my gardening class there is a college boy-- think he may be 20-- he said with school schedule & ball practice he couldn't do a regular job- but he sold @ 2 markets with produce he grew on his grandparents place. Says he did very well. Covered all his expenses for college.

Peaches I am sure you will have a full flock running around your place again real soon! Do you want keets or full size guineas? DD will be hatching soon. Also imagine I will thin out the pearls & lavenders. DD just wants to keep fancy colors I believe.

Lynn1961 & Sooner - Thanks for the tips on hatching these these eggs. I like the idea of an improvised hatcher-like thing and was wondering how to do that while keeping the humidity at an acceptable level.

Last night I put the two internally pipping eggs and a hen into a plastic bin with food and water, covered the top with hardware cloth and hoped for the best. I put her in a dark area to keep her calm. This morning I checked and the chicks have made holes in their shells, and the hen in there with them is sitting on them. She even growled at me when I reached in to check on the eggs. Maybe there is hope for the babies.

If I tell DH my birds growl -- he shakes his head & says why do you talk to the animals? I try to tell them if he spent more time with them he would learn how to understand what they are saying.

That is true! And I know what you mean. My friends laugh at me when I talk to my chickens, but I have to remind them that they are animals, just like their dogs or cats. They talk to those animals. Talking to chickens is no different. They communicate the only way they know how. Even plants like to be talked to and they can't talk back.

Carl, those boys when they become teenagers they aren't so keen on playing in the dirt as they are chasing girls. Mine spends all his time at school or at work. When he is off he is chasing or sleeping.

I also plan to use the paper feed sacks to keep the weeds down. There is no way I could plant what you are talking about!

Deanne, yes-if she's sitting on the eggs and growled at you over them she's claimed them. That's great! (like I would know lol! but I read a lot-haha)
I'd definitely keep her separate from the others while she's with the babies, too.
