***OKIES in the BYC III ***

guys! what do i do with a cracked egg almost ready to hatch!!! can i use newskin?

I would leave it be.. any adhesive added to the shell may make it nearly impossible for teh chick to pip and zipp the shell well enough to emerge correctly.

my cochin roo has some neck issues...?? not sure if the girls are ganging up?

Robin,
Looks to me like he is in a spring molt, if the hens are pecking the blood feathers then they are likely lacking in good animal protien in thier diet, or they may just be mean old bitties picking on the poor guy.

i am guessing within a day or two of hatching- was gonna move mama and babies this afternoon- the membrane is intact you can see and feel movement- how do i keep it from drying out?

If teh membrane is in tact and the shell is only cracked it should be fine. and should not dry out too much so long as the humidity under the hen stays good which it should.

Game bird feed is not all equal in contents... Too high or low protien, single source protiens (Animal or vegetable) vitamins minerals and amino acids can cause you problems in the flock too.

Well off to get some birds ready for a show saturday and next saturday, as well as a few others for a demonstration at the schools tomorrow. I wil bounce back on and off periodically through the day..
If anyone needs to contact me for anything calling would be best.

NanaKat,
Your OE eggs are all fertile, the others look good so far too.

Okie Ridge,
The Maran eggs are dark enough it is hard to say for certian at this point, I will candle them again this weekend after they have an opportunity to develop more than veining and will let you know how they are.

Thanks, I wondered if being that dark would make it hard to see if they were going to do okay. I will have hubby call you when he heads that way. I was going to take off work early to go out there but it is a crazy day here at work so no getting out of here before 5 if then.

Early development and veining is easier in light colored eggs, the real dark chocolate eggs like yours are much more difficult to see the fine veining detail waiting a few extra days for teh embyo to be large enough to see will make all teh difference in those eggs.
I unbderstand teh work schedule can be grueling sometimes.. i do not envy you in teh position your in, it must be frustrating at times but rewarding to know what your doing has positive effect on the lives of so many.

Oh I love my job but we have 3 out sick with pnemonia so I am filling in for the specialist, nutritionist and doing my lactation work, lol. But wouldn't trade this job for anything else. DH is on his way to see you. Carefull that Nathanael doesn't smuggle any of the OEGB home with him. LOL
