***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hello...I am new to BYC and looking for a little help. I currently live in Kansas and do not have chickens. It looks as if we will be moving to the OKC area within the year and we would like a home with an acre or more and I would like to have a few chickens and ducks. I grew up with farm animals and really miss them. My question is in regards to zoning. A lot of home with acreage are within the city limits of towns. What towns in the OKC area allow poultry? Thx for any input.

Glad you found us on the Okie thread and will be moving to our area soon!

Within the OKC area itself, unless your property has an acre or more, no poultry is allowed. There are smaller towns that have been surrounded by OKC that have more relaxed zoning restrictions and DO allow chickens, such as Warr Acres and Bethany. Most of the areas surrounding OKC the suggestions mentioned earlier are all good, too. These zoning codes are all available online (as far as I know) for free and might help you in your search.

Oklahoma City requires that you have at least one acre of property before chickens are allowed. Once you meet the 1 acre minimum however, there are no restrictions on quantity or roosters. There have been some attempts to change this ordinance, but to the best of my knowledge there has been no change.

Disclaimer: Some of the folks on this thread are addicted to hatching chickens, attending poultry auctions and otherwise acquiring poultry. Since addicts tend to be enablers, we may try to assist you in the acquisition of more poultry than you ever dreamed possible to own.
My wife has put her foot down. She claims we have too many dogs. Says either some of the dogs go, or she does.

I'm trying to decide.

On which dogs, that is.

Those Silver Laces are definitely gorgeous, Joe, I agree. But I don't think he meant it the way you took it. It's just a small picture and hard to see details (which is why I had to ask what they were).
Silver Laces are about the prettiest color there is, right up there with the Gold Laces you've got!

There are four new ones since Friday with more expected soon. Then there are the six silkied Seramas that hatched in early January. It's like a nursery around here now and they're all so cute! The older ones are feathering out nicely. One of those is solid white, two more are white with slight darker color in spots, then the other three silkied babies are colored much like their parents. I don't know what to call the colors, but they look buff colored with brown in the feathers and some black. So far all of the new smooth feathered babies are white or white with maybe buff coloring.

If I were to relocate to the OKC metro area knowing what I know, I would look into the Choctaw, Harrah, Newalla, or Bethel acres areas. If you want to be east of OKC. If you want to be west look into the piedmont, deer creek areas. These areas have great school districts (assuming you have or will have school age kids). Very easy access to the various parts of OKC for work activity and the lovely small town feel without being too far from things you might need.
Welocme to the Okies thread, look forward to adding to the Okie Roll call.
Are you relocating with the Boeing expansion in OKC or is it something else?

Yes, it would be with Boeing. Our kids are grown and married, so schools are not that important, except it always helps with resale. Thanks for the input...we were already interested in the Choctaw area, so it helps to know it would be a good area.

The chcoctaw area will put at a nice 30 minute drive to the boeing facility.. Congratulations on teh move I knew it had been offered to some of the employees.

Yea well I think I'd vote for your birds with their awesome coops and wrought iron pens :)

I think I'll have to retract my previous statement. If there's a spoiled bird contest it'll most certainly go to your birds lol! That coop is wonderful!! How did you ever think of using a sauna for a coop? It's the perfect idea and I LOVE it!

Buster, I feel your pain about having too many dogs. I wish you luck finding homes for them.

Thank you! I am so glad I decided to convert that sauna. I bought it used a few years ago and it was just taking up room apart in my garage. The electric to run the heating element would have needed an electrician and a few hundred dollars to make it up to code. Now I have a nice coop and it only took a day to put together and convert. You know what that means? MORE CHICKENS! lol Buster my dogs drive me nuts daily so I sure don't need more! Mine follow me around and trip me. Good luck finding them good homes.

Oh my! You might have to start a Serama shop!
