***OKIES in the BYC III ***

HAHA I like that kind of math!!! In that case we have 6 chickens and 1 guinea. Got our first guinea egg today!!!!

And I want you to know how peaceful and QUIET it is here since you guys took those loudmouth Guinea girls lol!! Amazing the irritating noise you can get used to and don't even realize it til its gone.

Hi Guys! I had my first chicks hatch this week. I got 3 of them to hatch? Not good rates on a doz? They were supposed to be d"Uccles....I have two of a blue color and one a mottle black? Can you give opinions as to whether these are d'Uccles or not...the lady who sent them, got mixed up and it was a mess...not sure what I got and I've never had d'uccles chicks or bantam cochins chicks...though I have them in the bator! I'll see if I can attach pics?

I am not an expert but I've handled about 40 or50 D'uccle chicks and about 200 Cochin chicks and I think they are D'uccles - head shape is what makes me say that. What do you think, folks with more experience?
The first one may be a Cochin but they have more light yellow in the black chicks.

They're adorable!!!! They've got beards and feathered legs so I would think that's what they are. Although I don't have that breed so my opinion may not mean much.

While I have you all here......I bought 15 Bantam Faverolles eggs thinking for sure that only 3 or 4 would hatch. The 3 I've got here are growing nicely and 11 of the 12 I gave to Carl to hatch were fine when he candled. That's great news but I didn't really plan on this many. I got 15 eggs thinking I might get 4 max out of the deal. Jackie/Firefly, I'll wait on your answer 1st in case-but it was $35 for the 15 eggs, does anyone want 1/2 of whatever hatches for $17 if more than 7 hatch? There's no guarantee of anything or how many will hatch obviously. We could just meet the day I pick them up and each reach in with our eyes closed and pick 1/2 the chicks lol Any takers? I can't part with them after I've raised them but I didn't want more than 4, this is the only way I'm going to be able to do it, I'm such a weirdo.

Just adding a PS-
If no one wants to do it that way I can probably pay Carl to raise them to 2 wks til they can be sexed and just take the girls and a boy.

If you are willing to part with one of your Splash boys, I am looking for a Boyfriend for my big girl Peaches. He would have a forever home here. Peaches is not impressed with my Bantam boys and she an a Splash could make some Lemon Blues.

I just want to say no fair on the guinea egg! I had about 50 guineas & still haven't found an egg! I have gotten 3 eggs from my peahen though!
My guineas must be holding out on me.

Well I was shocked to find this one. Mine all hatched last year and this is the first egg we have seen. I now have 4 female guineas but this one the only egg I found. Now gotta decide do we eat it or set it aside to try and hatch, lol.

LOL one of those girls is a peach, the other OMGosh she never shuts up!!! LOL I told dh she had better find a mate in all those boys out there and calm down, haha. But right now it is quiet out there but come about 5AM she will start up again.

last one for now

Sure thing! Our last weekend of basketball is this weekend (YIPIEEEE). We will have to plan something. I knew I was in trouble when I got home last night and dh talked for over an hour on "incubator ideas". Then he said you both are into motorcycles..........

I am happy the boys are finally getting this whole "chicken thing". Kurt has Aspergers so getting him interested in anything that isn't computers or a book has been horrible. But he saw the banty cochins and silkies and has caught the fever, lol.

What kind of Cochins does he want? Sharing birds with young bird lovers is HIGHLY contageous.

Aww... Lemon Blues are awesome! If you don't believe me ask Lucius...

Oh.... I want eggs from the first group you pictured.

By the way, would you be interested in joining the ameracochin project? Always looking for recruits.

That describes these sexlinks. Not mean a bit, just persistant like a goat.
Okla, this hen may be a favorite of one of the 2 boys but the other hens don't have a single feather out of place and this one has been gradually getting worse until all of a sudden today it looks like she got coon-attacked. I've never seen the Marans boys bothering her ever (but that doesn't mean much).

Jim, what's that bird with the blue head feathers? Georgeous.
Yes, I have cooties and if you don't watch it I'll toss some at you :)
Oh it's pretty obvious you're not in it for the money lol I think 3 wks should be fine. I have to talk to Jackie/Firefly and see how she wants to do it.

Poco, I love those Barnevelders babies-wow, they're so pretty!

Cathie, I've got a Little Giant also (with a turner). I've got a few eggs in it now but this is only the 2nd time I've tried it. The 1st hatch was with shipped eggs and about 1/2 hatched but who knows if that was me, the incubator or the shipped eggs. I don't have any words of wisdom except get the temps set ahead of time.
Here's some picture of the Cochin boys with their girls, they're really so polite to them. I thought they'd go nuts over them but nope. My favorite (the dark one) has the prettiest EE's in with him. I like that pen a lot. And all he wants to do is feed them, he practically begs them to come eat :) I really love that boy.
Edit: You can see the messed up combs on the 2 splash boys that were fighting.

Hi Everyone,
I went to buy shaving today at Atwoods and I heard lots of peeping from the back of the store. Aaacckkk the ducks are soooo cute, too.
My chics are coming next week
Cathie Sue

We went to Atwoods in Shawnee today, their chicks got delayed in the mail with the holiday so needless to say they had lots of DOA ones. Then the ones we went to look at (Bantams) were pretty punney looking. I knew several wouldn't make it through the next hour the others were running them over. Kurt wanted a few of them and I told him to wait we would find some that were taken better care of. But the bigger chicks looked good but the man working back there said they lost some of those as well.

OK, I have to laugh at this. I grew up with a dad who showed and raised rabbits. We often had more than 200 at a time. After reading this forum for a couple of days I have decided you are all nuts...I'm sure I'll fit right in.

Welcome.
I have chickens because my job is TRUELY nuts- Middle School Teacher. Compared to my average week day, chickens and chicken folks make perfect sense. Several of us are trying to have our birds deducted as a medical expence - Therapy!
