kass, its possible- ee's technically aren't broody.... i've had 3 in the last 6 months.... they didn't read the breed traits... what i have found is they will work up to it, one of my banty cochins walked around for days mumbling to herself, another hen did practice runs, she'd sit on the nest alot, started sleeping in the nestbox, eventually she started sounding like something out of jurasic park- another one is as sweet as can be, but as flat as a pancake- maybe take a pic and we can take guesses?? i know you just hate taking pics!

ask kenneth about his egg gathering this afternoon. he has a BIG oriental of some sort, and the chicken was winning for the first couple or three rounds. but the fat guy had more staying power and a bigger foot!

it was hillarious!

chicken actually did win, he was fine when we left and kenneth was limping around whining about his leg!

it was a kodak moment!

An you didn't have a camera...sounds like it could have made money on Funniest Home Videos.

First I want to thank everyone for the kind words during a time when they are needed. Family has all gone home and now we start back to the day to day stuff. Took a good deal of time to catch up on the pages of posts lots of good reading. All my birds are doing great, and all the chicks in the brooders are doing great. Tomorrow I head down to see Buster, I am excited. Be a nice drive and get to see some neat stuff.

Now is the time for you to simply relax and enjoy the memories as they come.

Moved out here from Tulsa. Love it in the quiet. But, never fully appreciated the "wind come sweeping down the plains". Lord, I'm pretty sure my chickens will all be pressed to the side of the coop as I have no trees, shrubs or other windbreaks. Any tips or helpful advice much appreciated.

Along with the suggestions already given.. Sunflowers offer wind break, shade and later food.
A piece of barn tin wired to the side of the pen..long side to the ground.

My windbreak for the peafowl pen isnt pretty. I took an in- ground pool cover that is huge-- folded in half & hung it on the corner of their pen. It only covers a very small section (the pen is 28x28). My birds always are in the corner keeping out of the wind or sun. I put it up for a temporary fix, but it has held so I haven't tried to change it.
For a few other pens we put up old privacy fence panels to break the wind in part of the run. Just gives a little shelter on those 30mph days! I am going to work on planting windbreaks around the pens -- but as of right now all trees I planted last yr appear to have not survived & we lost about 100 or so cedars of all ages.

Red cedars are huge water drinkers and a fire hazard...good ridance to them. We cut every one we see coming up. We leave the juniper trees because the cows like them for fly relief and rubbing and the berries offer food to the wild birds. FSA will help with removal of red cedars.

Today I Have to redo plant labels, some sharpie marker colors have already fadded off. Need to stick to black sharpies only looks like. Also need to thin some herbs I planted. Also going to do some general outside clean up.

Priced out t-post, TSC is the cheapest, but Lowes actually comes out cheaper when we use the military discount. We need about 250 post I think, hate when the small stuff adds up to BIG money!

I found some "industrial" sharpie markers at Staples. They last longer than the regular.

Awww Mezford, I'm sorry you are feeling bad! Hope it gets better for you. Sounds like your weekend caught up with you. Hope you are resting today.

not realy feeling bad, just everything that can be wrong is wrong. and it dont get any better!.

i'm just gonna hate to pull those 2 big bandaids off my rear, it drug so hard saturday it got raw, sunday it just had all it could take!

you ever heard the old saying, " no rest for the wicked " , well guess who that is!!!

Nana I will start to brain storm about raffle items-- sure I can come up with a few things. Maybe some eggs, wk old keets or chicks & not sure what else.... Possibly seedlings of some kind?? I know those cedars scream fire danger. Dh has cleared several since we bought the place, but it doesn't seem to make a drop in the bucket. I had told him we needed to get the dead ones gone before fire season, but looks like the fire season started even sooner this yr. I will look into getting some extra help removing them, I know they are giant match sticks just waiting. We have 4 chainsaws if you count the pole saw but think it is time to get a good industrial chainsaw, the ones from Lowes don't seem to take the use that DH throws @ him. One of the chainsaws was my FIL & it is fabulous, but so heavy no body can use it too long without being completely wore out! I will also have to check out the industrial sharpies! Thanks so much!

Nana Kat I will have something for the raffle but not sure what it will be at this point but will let you know as soon as I find something.......Last couple of years I have done a blanket that had POOPS on it & the year. Might do that again just not sure at this point.

Same goes for the NEOCS (can't remember the right letters.)

If you are clearing cedars my husband will come load a trailer with them. We have a local mill we take them to and will be building a fence out of them once we have enough milled.

Hello all. Sounds like the Pryor show was a hit. Glad those who went enjoyed it.

I'm down to seven broody Seramas now. Yay! We're slowly getting them un-brood-ized. They are stubborn little things. Kass - those broody hens do leave giant poo piles behind, and the smell is awful. You may very well have a setter.

Okieridge I will let you know if we end up with a pile of post. Dh gets kinda crazy with the chainsaw or pushing trees over with the tractor! But if I tell him someone wants them he will set the usable ones aside. The guy that owns the 300 acres next to us spent several wks with a dozed taking out hundreds of trees they are piled up with hopes he would have a good day to burn them.
