***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Will hens still eggs when they are not going broody? Had one take 5 eggs from the top nesting box & push them down to the bottom. If I haven't already seen the eggs up top I would have doubted it. She did manage to break one that she moved. Maybe we need to set up a chicken cam? I am going outside & working in the garden for a few hours. Hate daylight savings time but so excited for it not to be dark before 6!!

That's great to hear Kass, one of my cousins had a boy that had to have open heart surgery after he was born. It took him a few years to be "normal" after that. Come to hear he fell off his dirt bike and broke a few ribs this week, so I think he's pretty normal now :) This was some years ago, glad to hear they're taking different routes now!

Our new favorite Egg recipe!!!!

Smokey Egg Dip

Sounds heavenly!

I guess they cover the eggs in mineral oil.

I'd heard of that, didn't know if it really worked. Any of you have experience with it? With all the eggs I'll have this summer, I'll be up to my eyeballs in them, even after all the neighbors get theirs....

Woooo Hooooo!!!!! Just got awesome news. My niece was born w/ a heart valve problem that was going to result in open heart surgery, but the Dr's have been letting her get older and bigger for the surgery for the best possible outcome, and been keeping an eye on it so it didn't get to bad to do the surgery. Anyway she had a cardiology appt today and we found out it is self correcting. She is just at 1 year old now, and they need to do some more testing to make sure just how much it is going to self correct, but it is looking like open heart surgery is not going to be needed.

Fantastic news!

DH lost his firstborn to a similar problem. (before my time) He survived the first two surgeries, but didn't make it through the last one at age 4. Such a sad thing.

I got my new girls today!

They'll be 6 weeks old on Friday. I put them in the new baby section of the coop and sat in there with them. They are all so friendly and sweet. Several of them jumped in my lap right away.

Also have a new mystery roo. He's too cute! Any guesses on what he is? He's got fuzzies down to his toes. He's 3 weeks younger than the girls.

Here's a couple shots of the girls...

This one with all the white is already a favorite, but they're all wonderful!

Hi Everyone; I'm new to BYC but have been lurking awhile. We are in Norman OK out by the lake and our baby chicks are now 1 1/2 weeks old. 2 EE's, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Light Brahmas and 2 Cuckoo Marans. I'm simply in love! They are doing great and lots of fun but I'm wondering when/if I should let them have greens and if so, what kind. I put chick grit in their brooder yesterday just in case they should begin eating greens. Any thoughts? My grandmother had close to 5000 chickens -- all free to move about and lay at will back in the early 70's and so I grew up with chicks. Now continuing the tradition on a much smaller scale.

and the Okie thread.

I started feeding my chicks greens and insects from around 1 wk old after I started them w/ grit. Mine did well w/ that. If they were w/ a moma chicken they would start eating greens from day one.
