Hey Less, hows it goin?? Justy wanted to report on the NN I got hatched off from Don(ChicKens and more),They were hatched out last fall, I ended up with 3 nice red pullets, they lay nice size brown eggs, I get 2-3 eggs a day from them, they are exceptionally mild tempered, I have one that has eaten out of my hand all her life, they are wonderful when Heather gets in their pen(shes my 7 yo), I sold all my old NN hens to a friend, I put the old Blue Red NN Rooster I got from Marybeth in with the younger girls, I was a little skepticle of putting him in the pen due to the fact that there is no divider between him and the Grey Games in the next pen except the pallets that seperate them, I havent gotten around to putting tin up between the pens, Well to my surprise the NN and the Grey roosters both got along well with each other, no fights so far! In my opinion these are some wonderful birds for beginners to start with, I have found them to be well tempered, easy keepers, and good layers, I like the NN but you know me I am still a GameFowl man at heart!! Great all our live traps are at a friends house, hubby hasn't needed them so he borrowed them. Guess he needs to call him to bring a few home.

Thank you Nanakat for bringing my little fluff to me!!! The girls here in the office are ooh and aweing over them. They are a huge hit here, lol.

We got a dozen of the cutest little babies ever! Haven't looked to closely but I think we ended up with 3 blue splash marans, 3 cuckoo, 2 golden salmon and then some mysteries I will have to figure out lol. Thank you Carl for hatching them for us and arranging to get them to us. They are packed so well, and chirping happily in thier little box in my office. Their brooder is all clean and heated up waiting for them when I get home tonight.

I will have to look for some ag lime. Our runs are icky to say the least after all the wet we have had this week. I don't like my birds on the mud at all. Hopefully the sun will come out and dry some of it up this weekend.

Oceanseve, no accidentally drowning your poor baby peppers doesn't make me feel better. Has anyone had good success direct seeding pepper plants in the garden? I have some maraconi seeds I really wanted plants from, and can't find that variety for sale locally as a plant.

my grandparents on both sides planted everything from seeds except potato's, every year they would save the seeds from some of the previous years crop. Last year i planted some seeds from a store bought cantelpoe, they did fine till the draught hit. they used the farmers almanac to tell them when to plant.

Life is treating me good. Have trailers stacking up at work (which is not a good thing for a lazy old fart like me) and we are finally getting blessed with rain.

The NNs are a great bird for beginners. I have never had a rooster even cast an evil eye towards anybody nor act like they were going to flog you. They are naturally disease resistant and lay those big brown eggs. Plus the hens will go broody if you let them and raise every chick that they hatch. As you know I can't say enough good things about them. LOL

Well we had to put the last chick down from that batch of Barred Rocks. She took a turn for the worst. It sucked but I sure am glad we are done with that mess.

Morning Chicken loving Gardeners!!! Here is a quote from one of my other pages I thought might interest some of you with small planting spaces! Lynn

I have been growing potatoes in grow bags for years-it is a wonderful way to grow LOADS of them in small spaces! Rather than buy the expensive ready made grow bags though, I buy rolls of landscapers fabric on clearance at the end of each season, and make my own for the next. I am NOT a sewer, but you can easily buzz up the sides and bottoms of the fabric to form a bag. I roll down the top, add my soil and seed potatoes, and roll the top up as I add more soil when the potatoes show green. When time to harvest, I just tip the whole bag over on to a tarp, pluck out the yummy taters, and put the soil back in the bag ready for the next season (you will need new bags to add the extra soil to that was added during the "hilling" process. I just store the bags up under the eaves of the house for the next season. I grow 9 varieties of fingerling, new, and regular potatoes, and ended up with more out of my compact grow bags than my father in law did in his one acre garden! Also, don't forget about inverted gardening, where you grow plants upside down in hanging containers-does double duty, since you can grow lettuce, herbs, or another plant out of the top at the same time stuff is growing out of the bottom-wonderful use of space!

Good suggestion...The fabric bag would also let the soil drain and air prune the roots. Need to keep it lightly moist.

Sorry, if you want more barred rocks let me know. I am not hatching any straight barred rocks (all we are hatching from them are black sexlinks) right now but we will this fall. I would be happy to give you a 1/2 dozen when we start hatching them. My barred rocks are only 5 weeks right now but as soon as they start to breed you are welcome to some chicks.
