***OKIES in the BYC III ***

spent the morning mucking out the run, the drain was clogged- what a mess!! need to rethink how we are doing the drainage for it- what kind of lime do you put in the runs that is safe for the birds? no more sick birds or accidents, so maybe i got that all done for the year?? toots, the silky sleeps with a teddybear, and seems to be adjusting, feel sorry for her - but like grace said, they are prone to those kind of accidents... dave wrenched his knee in the episode, but is really upset that she got hurt...

Robin what you want to get is called garden or ag. lime and can be bought at most garden centers. What you want to stay away from is slaked lime which is also known as builder's lime. When water is added slaked lime really heats up.

Lime is used to sweeten soil and in the case of chicken runs will help with odor control. I'm told that it's bacteria that creates the odor and it likes a high acid enviroment to really flourish so by lowering the PH you can keep odors down.

Basically Ag. lime is just finely crushed limestone rock.

OceansEve, the blue egg gene *is dominant. But it'd be a long wait for blue eggs. Might be easier and faster to just buy some EE's

BBacres, my guess is there are more than enough people who will GIVE you eggs to hatch for the kids. I know I will. Just let me know if you don't find some elsewhere.

Mornning All,
I am back from my visit with my parents in Michigan. It was 80* and sunny every day - very unusual weather for March in Michigan. They had a mild winter too, even stranger than our mild winter. DH did a good job with my birds, I think he secretly enjoyed it. The broodies wouldn't let him check under them though.
I've got 1 in the layer's house who's downright vicious when I go to collect eggs. She fuzzes up like a beach ball and actually bites!

Here's my girls. Anyone have any guesses to what they could be?? The close up of the red feathers, could that be an RIR?? I got one blondie that is just bold and the first to inspect anything before the others come up. It's almost like if she's in charge. I don't know if they have a head of the flock bird?? lol Like my goats I have a herd queen. haha

Does anyone here have experience with lime and runs? Our soil is red clay and is a nasty mess right now. I have put pine shavings on top Tuesday but that didn't last long. We have tried straw but that was just a mess. If lime is okay and will help with bacteria to boot that would be great!

How about some Silkies that lay blue eggs or NNs? There is a guy in Australia that has bred the blue-egg genes into these two breeds.

Lime works very well. You can mix with the pine shavings and place in a garden area when you clean the pens out periodically. Then you will have very rich garden soil too.

Possibly a Silgo, Red sex link, or Red star.. Could also be a LeghornX RIR should make good layers if they are pullets. Different hatcheries and breeders do different things to get good layers but those are the 4 most common.

Got the eggs candled, now boiling the in-fertiles to feed to the chicks, young birds and indoor breeders. Would put some with the other breeders that are outside but with the rains we have had it would really attract the predators that have been penned down with the storms th elast few days.

Anyone that doesn't know this is when you have to be very diligent after a few days of storms the coons, possums, and everything will be looking for easy meals so get your live traps out and ready for the few days and nights.
