***OKIES in the BYC III ***

awww! she's precious! The big thing with geese is alot of handling early on, thats why Poser was so special, they really need bonding time with you...:) your little gal here is trying to hatch out some babies - if that doesn't make it interesting walking near the porch!
Hey Robin! Look what I came home with tody! I found it at a flea market,It was the only one left. I figured if it was a male it would be good but if it was a female that would be good too. Win win either way. Well it tested out by the string to be a female so your lady will have a girl friend to keep her company! I think its only a day old,its pretty small. And so cute! Can you make out the little tuft on her head? Ive never raised a baby goose before so wish me luck!

speaking of babies... have been watching the guineas go in and out of the back - i can watch them from the studio- so today they were really carrying on, i thought maybe a snake... welll... did you know guineas have egg songs??? the two males were carrying on and the female came out, they are so tame, and trusting, i can go right up to them, so they let me look.... 18 eggs!

Buster, so sorry for the hard times you and your family are experiencing.

A great day for those of you fortunate enough to be working in the gardens. That's what I'll be doing tomorrow.

Today has been a bad day for me, on my way to work got a call that my baby NN chicks were at the post office, but I had already left for work. The hatchery didn't let me know they were coming, even though I called earlier this week to find out. I ordered 15, when Gary opened the box at the PO there were 10 dead and 2 more nearly dead. I called the hatchery and left a message so we'll see how that goes they said they would replace dead ones. I am not as miffed about the dead ones as the lack of communication. Last time I heard I still have 5 alive, but he doesn't think one or two will live. I researched this hatchery before ordering and got nothing but positive comments about customer service and quality of chicks.

Oh bummer! You have been so excited about getting them.

Ok, seriously, this weather is nuts. We all have sunburns from working in the yard and it's still March. Been running the A/C for two weeks. Ugh.

On a better note, got three bantams yesterday to keep our single hatched baby company. Not quite sure what our hatch baby will look like as it's a cross between a white leghorn and an ee roo. Our three bantams are all different. One is a silkie, either white or blue, which I've always always wanted, a light brahma and the third is a golden sebright. I can't wait to see how they grow up. I've never had bantams before. HOpefully they survive our summer.

Robin I have only found nest in the woods after I hear my guineas egg song. They don't all sing it, but when they do it seems everyone joins in! On the plus side, you just finished emptying your incubator so for the next 28 days you can keep the incubator full! Guineas hatch MUCH faster than chicks. They seem to all pop out within a couple of hours. Chicks DRAG out the hatch for days it seems!

Most of my birds seem to lay about 6 months of age. The birds I hatched in October only 1 is laying. Haven't figured out who it is, but I strongly suspect it is a NN lady.

Plan for tomorrow is to butcher 20 Roos. Hope I can go fast, or i may stop once it gets too hot. DH brought home a fridge for the barn tonight. Now I have a good place to rest all the birds! Yeah!!!!!!

Goodnight everyone!

If you have a mature goose, they sometimes will adopt little goslings. I had a duck hatch out 2 along with her own one summer. The geese heard them and stold them from momma duck and raised them as if they hatched them. Let them see each other and see what happens. The only thing I would worry about is keeping it warm at night for the first week. After that, as warm as it is, it'll be just fine without extra heat. (unless it gets wet).

dang it, i hate falling asleep like that!

carl, i will call you tomorrow morning sometime, count what you got and figure me a price. realy need blacks, bb reds, red pyle columbian, blue reds, hens or cocks either one. wouldnt mind having a pair or 2 of opal's, i have 1 kid that is good with birds that would like some.

i have scrounged out about 20 pairs of birds right now, and have about 12 kids wanting birds, so i hope i have some left next week!

these kids cost me more than my own did!

Do the kids just want OEGB? what other breeds if not? How old do they need to be?

oh no, i get silkies, cochins, all kinds of birds for them.

only thing i realy keep around here are old english and moderns. i try and keep several sets of breeders so i have babies to raise. most i give away, some i get my money back on, others i sell for profit. i guess i might break even after a while, mostly it is just fun for me and keeps me out of the bars! and i havent been in a bar in 30 years either!

birds need to be close to a year old before i get rid of them most of the time, there are a few kids that can take care of young birds, but not many. i just feel better if they stand a better chance of living.

Thanks, all, for the kind words and prayers. Sorry to complain like that. Just wanted to say it somewhere to somebody, and I know you folks are kind.

My nephew's name is Mark, his mother (my sister) is Helen. If you want to pray, pray they find peace. Mark's kidney shut down today, his immune system is completely gone. There is no chance he is going to recover. But he has much of his family around him, and he is strong.

He's a good kid.

Came in from the garden for a lunch break. Planted a pound of green beans, several dozen melons & 18 each, squash, zucchini & cucumbers. Went to plant my corn & 80% floated & 20% sunk so I am going to do a germination test. .
For the poke salad, DH mows it down & it still comes back. I seriously think it would take an extreme effort to kill it (round up maybe)? Each berry has dozens of seeds in it, so unless I start collecting all the berries it will continue to multiple here for many years to come.
Tomorrow is suppose to be HOT. The dogs have already began seeking cool places to sleep during the day & we have been running our a/c for the past wk. usually it is at least mid April before we turn the air on. Fingers crossed we don't have another year of record breaking temperatures.
Sounds like a really big garden....Poke has huge roots and grows back from the root as well as from seed. I have some in my garden and I cut the flower stems before they seed. If you fertilize poke, it will die....it likes some compost. Have been running the water cooler in the new hen house...trying to keep the temps about 80. Tin roof on the barn really builds up heat.

It has been a rough couple of weeks for my family. Three weeks ago, my son in law lost his grandmother, to whom he and my daughter have been very close and had been caring for over the past 5 years. Thursday, his mother (her daughter) died. Friday, I got the news my nephew has double pneumonia and a staph infection, is in ICU and not expected to make it.

Sorrows come in threes.

Will be praying for Mark and Helen. Sorry for the losses in the family and the difficult times.

Buster sorry y'all are going through so much lately! Next weekend should be good for you to see family & relax a bit.
I spent some more time working on the poops vinyl, the 2012 is going to be left off-- sorry I just can't get it straight! It is too tiny!!!! Here is what I came up with this time. the decal is on a plastic charger, just for decoration. Not for food use, my nephew was wanting to eat off of it for dinner!

Cool...Thanks for posting the photo. Our POOPS raffle will have some great items!!

Spent hours in the garden today. Had to take many breaks due to heat. But things are coming along. I have 11 trees to plant. Hopefully after the soccor game Sunday afternoon, I can get hubby to put the big auger on the tractor and dig a few holes.
