***OKIES in the BYC III ***

thanks for sharing this link! I book marked it so it will be easier to find in the future.

I always thought "a chicken is a chicken" so any chicken egg takes 21 days to hatch. I see that jungle fowl have a separate category and that red jungle fowl take 19 - 21 days to hatch. That explains why the red jungle fowl hatched by the kindergarten classes this year hatched in less than 21 days. (they got their eggs from B&D Game Farm in McLoud)

P&B, different breeds, and even different lines of the same breed can hatch differently. I have a pair of brown red old english that consistently have their chicks hatch on day 19 early day 20....

I am considering a couple small stock tanks I have a kiddie pool but it's in with the geese for now, I have several large rubbermaid tubs I used for brooders last year I need to make tops for those just to keep the cat honest and from being tempted LOL Really she is a great cat never has offered to bother any of the birds no matter where they are. But on that note I never figured my geese to be chicken killers either so don't take too may risks anymore LOL

My cats won't bother a chicken that is at least a teenager, but they sure sit and look at the brooder when there are chicks inside.

By the way - I love the pictures of the two broody hens sharing a flock of chicks.

Very old remedy for open wounds that is still used today on some burn patients, bed sores and foot injuries for diabetics. Honey is an antibiotic and the sugar changed the ph in the wound allowing it to heal better. Both help avoid gangrene. We use the stretch ace bandages with sugar and honey on cuts on our cows too. That's what grampa always did. Also, black salve is an excellent mask for the red cuts from peckers in the flock.

what is black salve? might help one of my poor hens who has a naked neck, not willingly...

Black Salve can be found at feedstores and western goods stores. basically it's a black salve with Ichthammol in it...
One brand is "Prid Salve" smells like Vick's Vap O Rub
In a pinch mix black ashes in with a little vaseline
Don't use anything with black tar in it...not supposed to be used on animals intended as food.

I'll have to find my recipe for it...now where did I put that.....

What is a tin horn and why did you put them in your creek?

Thoes big wide metal pipes you see going under driveways and such in drainage ditches to keep the water flowing under the road and not over it.

It is working out slow, it is in transit. Hopefully it shows up in the next day or so. It says right on the webpage, "Dont buy eggs till you get your incubator". I figured that was for other people, I started saving eggs a few days ago. How long is the longest any of you guys ever hold eggs and they hatch.

Hey Matt got the barrels and I thank you very much!!! Love your folks place, it sure is pretty and back in the sticks!!!! Got home and my lovely wife had chores done, so tied out the lawnmowers(One Sorrel and One Paint Draft cross) and started them on the front jungle!!! Gathered the eggs and called it a night. Was going to build on some more cages but just too tired!!! Elwood I use the big plastic totes and I cut a hole in the snap on top and put hardware cloth on it and I just lay my flood lamp on top shining in and change out the size bulbs to lower the temps as they get bigger!!! Easy to clean out too!!! Got a few NN, RIR and a couple Black Austrolorps in one in the living room right now!!! Later, Lynn
