Black Salve can be found at feedstores and western goods stores. basically it's a black salve with Ichthammol in it...
One brand is "Prid Salve" smells like Vick's Vap O Rub
In a pinch mix black ashes in with a little vaseline
Don't use anything with black tar in it...not supposed to be used on animals intended as food.

I'll have to find my recipe for it...now where did I put that.....

ahhh....ichthammol- i use that as a drawing salve- would it mess her up to put it on her neck? betcha it tastes bad.... dave calls it axel grease- works great on splinters

It won't mess her up, it will wash off next time you shampoo her. It is supposed to taste bad but not every chicken thinks so...so keep an ey on her. Haven't found my recipe yet...can't figure out where I put it.

I guess clarification is in order: Jason and I are just talking and will be meeting with a realtor to discuss the pros and cons of selling this place and looking at finding a home with minimum to no neighbors and low probability of urban development. Because we have yet to decide on what realty/realtor to go with( Elgin Realty,Johnny Owens or Remax)... it is at this moment just talk... I apologize to anyone I may have mislead with my excitment to look elsewhere to live and having it come across as a "statement" that we are moving right now.. My excitement of doing anything new always comes across way hyped than it should be... as a member of a largefamily that is either contractors or real estate agents I know the REAL REALITY OF WHAT IT MEANS TO SELL AND BUY and the long process it can be. I apologize to my fellow BYC members that I have talked to that may have lead it to be that we were moving ASAP...

Ok moving on, we have all the babies, bunnies and guineas we can handle and I am grateful that I had some wonderful help today with getting the "animal nursery" all cleaned up and settled in just right for the newest additions to our barn yard crew... Thank you Peaches kids and my kids for the help it was appreciated and we enjoyed the company over the weekend.

A good drawing agent and pack is a mixture of sugar and iodine. Makes a good poultice to draw out bumblefoot. I will have to look up the precise directions.

Thanks for the info Laura, she posts as crazychick and really knows her stuff.

Generally, I try to avoid cutting the foot pad open if I can help it.

Sometimes you add bacteria to the problem, making it worse.

Try the iodine/sugar poultice first, wrapping with the coflex bandage to keep it clean.

Change it daily.

The bacteria doing the dirty work is most often a staphlylococcus bacteria and I've found that Penicillin G procaine (white penicillin) given at a dose of 30 000 I.U., twice a day (once a day in less severe infections) is good at treating bumblefoot.

If there is no change in the swelling after 3 days, then you may have to open the wound up. If you have to, you must wrap it every day until it is more or less healed, or more staph bacteria will get in there and start the whole cycle back up.

This is why I avoid it if possible.

There probably won't be any liquid pus in the foot, but a cheesy pus that works its way into the tendons and ligaments in the foot- be prepared to get as much out as you can, but don't risk damaging the foot.

Flush it out with sterile saline (under pressure- put the saline into a syringe and flush with quite a bit of force). I avoid hydrogen peroxide in open wounds as it stings and can do tissue damage (if used too often... It has it's place, though).

You can flush the wound with a tea colored solution of betadine and water- mostly water with just enough betadine to make the solution the color of strong tea.

Flush this in first (again, in the syringe) then flush it all out again with the saline.

Hopefully the wound comes around with just the Pen G procaine and the iodine/sugar poultice.

Good luck,

Laura

Here is the info on the poltice.

What you do is to take regular table sugar and add Iodine to it until it is just wetted but not enough to disolve it. Then put in a bandage like vet wrap and wrap the foot with it over the sore. In a few days the mixture will draw out the pus in the foot pad.
