***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Old cowboy, that thought hadn't crossed my mind, but now...... My wife wants the bantam nn for a fun little flock, and the Bantam asil for broodies, and I want a Madagascar to cross with an asil, to create exceptionally hardy, bigger broody hens that are not as aggressive as pure asil. But now that I think about it, i might have to pick up a couple bantam shamo or bantam asil pullets and a small nn cock.

Found out today that Gary has a secret BYC account. Well not exactly secret I guess, he just never mentioned it to me.

I think all my barred NN's are boys, I will need to decide reallly soon if I'm going to attempt the big "C" w/o observing someone do it first. I've decided on the one NN boy I will keep it is the blue barred one and named him Shakespear. The large white w/ black has a completely bare neck, no bow tie, I am 99% sure he is a he, if anyone needs a complete bare neck for the genetics (and would want his color) let me know before I do the big "C"

This one

Evening everyone! Well it looks like we are heading into another drought year here! For this time of spring it is really dry. Stuff in the garden isn't sprouting, its just to dry. My irs have been poor bloomers this year. Lots of buds didn't have enough moisture to open up and most that did only last for one day. I mowed today and it hadn't grown much, usually I'm mowing twice a week this time of year.
I put my baby goslin down on the ground with some of the chicks she has grown up with. She abandoned them is following the big Icelandic roo around! When he clucks for his hens she comes running! He looks at her like " what are you doing here!" . Its really funny to watch.
Had a new batch of g.pigs born this week,I'll add a pic of them. They are the prettiest batch I've had I believe. Also saw a neat pic of a Komodor that I thought those of you who have them might enjoy.

What do you do with your guinea pigs? Sell them as pets or food?

I have a question....
I hav been incubating chicks for a few yrs now... - well I have some chicks out of this batch
To look what appears to be their guts hanging out its butt....should I be worried....is there something I can do to my incubator.
I keep consistant temp and humidity........ I have hatced almost 1000 chicks this yr. Ive seen a few like this..however ive had 5 out of 9 hatched with this...
Out of it's vent or belly? If it's out the vent I vote with whoever it was that said cull, sounds like bad genetics.

I need your opinion...

I've got some 4 week old chicks that I had put outside early since its been so unseasonably warm this spring. They have done great so far, but now its supposed to be 38 tonight and I'm wondering if I should pull them back inside. What do you think?
I'd either bring them in or put a heat lamp out with them

Wow. lots of posts. I'm in the middle of water changes on the big Oscar tanks. I'd slacked off for awhile but a month ago started doing them once a week again like I always had.
Christina, for the farm tax-do you have to pay in what you've saved at the end of the year? There's got to be a catch (after all it's the IRS).
I got 14 eggs in the mail today! All LF Cochin eggs, 1/2 Gold Laced and 1/2 Silver Laced. I saved the picture of the some of the adults they have and will post it. All I know is I love how their lacing is. The birds look nice and big, too.
Robin, didn't you have some Silver or Gold Laced Cochin eggs? How did that hatch turn out?
I've come to the conclusion that some roosters are just harder on their hens than others. Out of my 2 Slash Cochins, the one I kept had a few bald women and he had 12 hens to chose from. The one Rebecca took had been living with just 2 hens and they didn't have a hair out of place. Same with my big blue/black Cochin. His ladies are pristine with not a single torn feather, the Modern boy never ruffles a feather on his hen yet the big Faverolles boy must like em' bald because that's how his hens are looking. I don't *like the hens to be missing their head feathers :( So are some roos just too rough on the girls? Or do they have a favorite? Maybe the bald ones are just slower and get grabbed 1st?
Anyway, here's the picture of a couple of the breeding stock where my eggs came from, the boys look different from the girls but I love their colors. I don't have a flipping clue about "type", I just know what I like. I've wanted more Cochins hatchings so bad, but was scared to hatch any because my Cochins are the ones I get overly attached to. I'll have to work on that.

beautiful birds!

Okay. I just wasn't standing on my head long enough. Here's the new momma and her twins.

How cute! You're making me want goats!

First picture is of Charlie pulling the skin off of Bears face.

Here we have Bear explaining to him he dont need no more skin pulled off.

Finally he said to heck with it, I will just eat Charlie.

HAHAHA great pics, pretty dogs too :)

Agh - need to get outside and get some stuff done, it is friday isn't it?? There's always hope for the weekend, right?

Is the Newcastle auction still going tomorrow night?

It is as far as I know and starts at 5:pM from now on they are really on the ball there I got a call the other evening letting me know about the change to the start time that makes twice they've called to relay info that's great customer service not every business will go to those lengths, I haven't decided if I'm going yet or not I haven't anything to sell and shouldn't spend any money at this point but then again it is a poultry sale... I see myself making a statement in my future something like, "Hi, I'm Elwood and I'm a Chicken-Sale-A-Holic"

There is a beautiful, sweet smelling tree/shrub that is blooming on the property line of mine and my neighbor's house. I used to know what it's called, but can't, for the life of me remember right now. It's in bloom now and has butterflies all over it. By all over it, I mean HUNDREDS of butterflies. Today I captured photos of just a few.

Pretty sure this is a Jasmine if it's a vine, if it's more like a bush or shrub I have had something like it before but seemed to me to draw flies to the flowers more than butterflies or bees, I have an evergreen that I kinda accidentally transplanted to my place here when I was given some Crape Myrtle and Lilac it has flowers kinda like that also but isn't blooming yet, I like growing flowering vines of different types I haven't started any honeysuckle here but it can real invasive same with morning glory I planted some years ago and haven't been able to kill it off yet LOL I want to grow some different Clementis and more climbing roses if anyone has or will part with seed or starts,

A while back some of you were talking about non-invasive cane or the clumping types I have a type of native cane that is clumping and variegated with white stripes down the leaves the white goes away around June to August at the weather gets hot but is really nice looking, If anyone wants some of it I can dig a few root sections and bring to poops I can also bring some to NEOCS in June but that's about the latest in the year I would try to transplant it, It's better to do that in the cooler times of the year but will survive if you give it some TLC

I'm sure you've heard of where Ortho makes a product called "Weed-B-Gone".
sickbyc.gif
That stuff ain't allowed anywhere near my garden. I don't like to use chemicals, BUT... They also make "Grass-B-Gone". It will kill anything in the grass family without harming the broad leafed plants. It's really great getting rid of bermuda growing in the cactus bed too.

Wonder if it kills Dallas grass....

Going to take some stuff and try and thin down the feed bill.wife lost her job so it's going to be tight for a while. Always something to happen it seems. She has a promising interview today so keep your fingers crossed!

This is privet. It's a good, multi-purpose, semi-evergreen landscape shrub. It lives almost forever with very little care (you don't even have to water it), and you can trim it into any size shrub or hedge you want, or let it grow naturally--which is the form I prefer. Butterflies love its sweet-smelling blooms and birds love its seeds. The only drawback is that it will throw many, many seeds, as well as their being distributed by the birds, and you may have to destroy a lot of seedlings. However, they are very easy to pull, even when they are a couple of feet tall.
Seeds would be nice...I must be a bird....

Been out in the garden. The storm got the best of things. Had tomato plants that were already setting fruit & they are smash to pieces. Lost most of the stuff I had in the ground. Several hundred tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, greenbeans, etc Good thing I started so many extras in jan-feb. Back up plants are going in the ground after lunch. Will be a long day of playing in the dirt.
Sorry to hear about the grden amage..good thing you planned ahead.

No dogs were actually ate in the filming of the above clips.

Loved the pictures!

I have a climbing rose named 7 sisters that only blooms in the spring but has climbing skills like Jac's bean stalk...it will grown over anything....If yu want some starts I'll bring some to POOPS. Would love tot get a start of the cane.

We are going to my Daughter's in the morning to help plant the fruit trees and bushes they bought for their new home. It is a newly built home with no landscaping and they really need the help.
So won't be able to go to Newcastle or Mary's swap on Saturday.

One of the Columbian Wyandotte hens has decided to go broody....no breaking her either. So I added 10 Blue Wyandotte eggs and a few CW under her today. Any one know if a LF CW could cover OEGB eggs without breaking them? I have some Spangled OEGB that I could slip in the nest.....

I'll load some up and bring to POOPS then I have a ton of the cane growing, I am trying to see if I can get it to grow from the canes that were grown last year it didn't get cold enough this winter to kill it back so it's putting off all over the old stalks I don't know if any of it will take it would have to make new roots from the cutting and haven't found any info on doing that just though I'd give it a try the worst thing that can happen is I have something to add to the compost pile LOL

Bill if the cane is really clumping I would love to have some. If it spreads DH will have a fit. He hates bamboo the way Kass hates Bermuda.

Gotgame I will reserve the one lone NN for you-- every other wk I have been moving the NN into a different brooder so it could be with chicks it's size. (when I bought the I bought the only 2 NN that were there, but the other one didn't make it)

The girls & I have been working in the garden all day. Came in for dinner then back to planting. Think we got over 200 sweet peppers 75 hot peppers, some squash & beans & about 300 ft of okra done. After dinner we will plant 200 or so more tomatoes. I looked over my plants REAL hard. Only found 3 surviving tomatoes with fruit on them. So sad!!! I gambled putting my tomatoes out way early but thought it was worth the risk in hopes of them setting fruit before we hit triple digits. Any plants that had leaves below the breaking point I left in the ground & trimmed close to the breaking point. Figure if they make it they will be pretty strong plants. I removed the greenbeans that showed no signs of hope. Sunday I will go through them again then replant in all the spots of the removed plants. I dont like the idea of having bush bean planting staggered throughout the row, but that will be alot of dead space if I don't replant the beans.

Kids are finished with dinner so we are heading back out to the garden until dark. Told them we could go to frontier city tomorrow since they worked hard all day in the garden. Now the real question is after 8+ hours bent over in the garden will I be able to walk through the park tomorrow?

You will be fine putting any egg under the wyandotte, They are great mothers and outstanding Broodies when they decide to sit your best bet is to let them they break faster that way. Warning first let her keep the chicks for about 1 week then take them so she will go back to laying otherwise she will go straight back to sitting.
