***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Mitzi - awww. You don't suck, you're just a sucker for pets :) I can relate!

Thanks whoever clarified the NPIP thing, question tho, if you are buying new birds regularly does the state ever cut you off and say they won't come back out for X amount of time to test?

My guinea keets are starting to look blueish on their chests. I was hoping they would be a mixture of kinds, but looks like they're all the same, oh well.

Many here on the site are approved NPIP testers. Teva and I both have our cert. from the state and there is a state Vet. that lives down in the Piedmont area. Before we got our cert. she would often stop by our place to test on the way home from overseeing the various auctions she went to.

I sell eggs so wash them before I put them into the carton. I don't wash them immediately upon collection because I feel like the cuticle/covering on the egg keeps bacteria from going into the shell and don't want to remove that protection until the eggs are ready to sell.

On the same topic, does anyone have thoughts on the topic of leaving eggs at room temperature? I have heard that if you haven't washed the eggs they can be left at room temperature for a week or more without deterioration. I wonder how the egg quality is affected - whether the yolk stays round and plump or if it flattens out when broken into a pan. Also, any thought on whether refrigerating the egg starts some kind of chemical process such that the eggs have to then remain refrigerated in order to keep from deteriorating?

From what my friends in England tell me eggs offered for sale are not refigerated, not even in the stores. Many people there still sell small amounts of eggs to local shops and they get a rubber stamp to stamp their name and such on each egg.

Hopefully you get that ata least. I went to OKC VA again today in the on going saga of getting my blood back like it is supposed to be. Wasnt close today so have to change blood thinner amounts and go back next week to be stuck again.

Well everyone have a good evening, i'm out for now.. already me cheer of a hatcher full of chicks.. Nanakat got her 50 or so so far, Okieridge picked up 38, The boys came and got thiers, and I moved mine outside. One tray to go for Nanakat and this weeks hatch will be done. Had a overall great hatch 100% on all but one tray which were shipped eggs giving the last few a couple of days just to make sure but not real hopefull.
Every baby is doing great!! Can't wait to see if the hold outs hatch and those Bo Garrett blue cochins. Get some much needed rest!

Hopefully this picture will load here. I tried to send it in a PM but it wouldn't send, good ol' dial up. Here is the basket for the POOPS raffle. There is an oven mit, two pot holders, two kitchen towels with crocheted tops so they are easy to hang from fridge or oven door. 4 of my favorite potscrubbers (MIL made the crocheted items) and a neat set of chicken salt and pepper shakers.
Wow...this is sooooo cute!!!

Our neighbor gave us a yazoo style push mower for the raffle! It has high wheels and a side lever to raise and lower the blade. It works fine.

Yeah...a great Raffle item too!

Quote: I don't wash the "bloom" off the eggs I will hatch. It they are a little soiled, I use a dry soft scrubbie to brush off the dirt. The bloom is natures protective coating against bacteria.

Quote: Our pasture plum thickets are loaded!

On the longevity of eggs, keeping them 90 days for your own consumption is fine. But according to USDA regs, if you are selling them, they must be immediately refrigerated upon collection and sold within 45 days, with the date of lay or sell-by date on the carton.

NanKat,
The D'anver Hold outs have not done anything, however on a better note from Bo's eggs you have 7 Blue and 2 Black. Three have not pipped yet so I'm doubtfull on those.. Steph goes to work about mid-day if you would like you could contact her to arrange a pick up or I'll be in around 6 tomorrow night or I can hold them till this weekend.

Thought I would wait until Monday evening if that is okay. Maybe the holdouts will decide to do something...if not....
Do you want me to have the boys load a few bales of that straw on the truck?

Monday evening is fine with me.. as far as the straw I will not complain if you want to bring some, or I can come out there when time allows.

Hello folks. Boy been a busy weekend. Wife got a parttime job which is ten hours on sat and sun. So she has been busy to. I went to the auction yeaterday. Did retty good. Got rid of a few more mouths that I won't have to feed and didn't buy anything to replace them!
Mowed daughters yard this morning and then went to lowes and got material to built a bigger and better A-frame. Sold two of the ones I had built so need to replace at least one of them. Lucked out and am getting a roo and four hens of partridge rocks this week. Nine months old and very pretty. Didn't really need a new breed but can't turn down a good deal.
Still looseing my bantam chicks. They just aren't thriving. I have tried everything, just don't know. The bigger chicks in the same hatch are doing okay.
Its been in the high 80 s this weekend. I made a scratchstrawberry shortcake last night. Boy was it ever good! Did some one say diabeties! Oh well sometimes you just have to splurge and taste the old days!lol
