***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh, my gosh, what a week. I am trying to build a brooder, a chicken ark for my cochins and a big coop for my Doms. I put up a fence temporarily so at least the Doms can come out of the hen house. Running around with my hair on fire.

Well it is tomorrow! LOL I guess I should get to bed. Just wanted to say I am sorry for all the losses posted today. The losses will always be the hardest part for me. We have a lot of dogs running loose around me and I am constantly worried something bad is going to happen. Right now I keep a BB gun near the door to encourage those dogs to stay away. I don't like doing it but some of them just will not listen any other way. We did get two great pyrenees (sp) but as they are pups it will be some time before they are trained.

Carl, I would love to get some of the plants and seed from you! Thank you! I will call or PM tomorrow.

I spent all evening and tonight taking care of that one baby quail. I have become "mom". First the little buggar got out of two different brooders that I thought were escape proof. Those little button quail babies can squeeze through some tiny spots!! Then I tried a finch cage, yep you guessed it, escaped again. I then had him/her in a dog carrier with tiny wire over the door. Found him in the cabinet under the fish tank that time. He had found the power converter for the tank lights and was happily warm. Every time I pick him up he immediately crawls up to my neck and then in my hair. He sits behind my ear singing.

I had a warming pad in my lap and he would climb down into it and sleep in the fleece. My hubby finally redid the entire bird cage in teeny tiny wire and plastic canvas. I have him sitting beside me with a light. We will see if this holds him!!

I kind of doubt I will get much sleep tonight.

Talk to y'all tomorrow,

Nana sorry about your girl, at least it was peaceful.

Whoever asked about the planting, I am not an expert by any means, but I think you still have time to plant most things, probably not the cool crops until later in the summer for the fall.
Thanks, I never plant my okra until the weather is warm. They catch up with those planted earlier because okra loves heat. June 1. Beans go in after we pull onions in late May. Sweet potatoes can still be planted. Cool season stuff can be started in pots inside in early August to go out when it is cooler.
thanx for all the condolences everyone. Its never easy losing birds and even harder finding the masacred bodies. I was able to replace some of the marans and blue ameracaunas today from mj's neighbor, jack. since there has been some garden talk I would like to mention that i have already started pickin squash, carrots, potatoes, radishes, asparagus, onions and have some tomatoes the size of baseballs. I have put in somewhere around 2000 tomatoes this year. I will be opening a store in the Choctaw plaza to sell my eggs and veggies and any other locally produced or handmade items.
The family in Choctaw will be happy to visit your shop!!!
Didn't one of them have roast beef?.. LOL

And Yes, I do have pigs in a blanket! (can't remember who said that now LOL)
She let me go in and pick one up didn't offer to bite until I reached for her neck to get the tick by her ear and she warned me I was too close, Guess I'll try again the next time I feed, She was supposed to have come from a petting zoo somewhere but she sure don't like being touched the male on the other hand thinks he's in heaven if you scratch his side, he'll flop over like a fainting goat for a belly rub
ETA, But then again so will I

LOL Yes...the one that had the big lunch (My partzheimer's wouldn't allow me to remember what he ate lol)s
Hey Nana, got the bush! Any tips on planting? sure appreciate sooner playing taxi!

lost my red star pippin day before yesterday- been battling something with her since last fall, and pen-g would work, pull her out of it, but this last time, she seemed to be losing coordination, found her in the run- she was one of my older hens...and a rescue from tsc

this broodyitis is really getting rediculous, have 4 nest boxes with broodies, so spread the eggs out and marked them so i can collect the non-brooded eggs..
Sorry about your hen. The 7 sisters rose roots very easily. Since it is going to rain, this would be a good time to set it in the ground where you want it to grow. Loves sun, a fence to grow on and keep it watered for this summer...once a week. Will grow up a trellis and even a tree. The long cane can be unrolled and laid in a shallow trench and each node will root giving you a bigger number of plants that can be separated and moved. If you don't plant it right away, keep it in the pot in the shade until the root ball gets stronger.
Hubby says 6 - 8 weeks they will wean. As they begin to eat more feed andhave less desire for milk. Any Mama will become a bear when she has babies....even the sweetest little thing.

OMG they're adorable!! Baby pigs are SO CUTE!! But just like baby geese I know what they grow up into lol
I wish I'd have taken all 6 Orps, I'm kicking myself now. I didn't know at the time you'd take back the males or I would've. I was way too scared of getting boys and that's the only reason I didn't take all of them that day. They act exactly like my Cochins. All puffy and laid back.
I'm about hatched out here and I've got the Blue Wheaten/Wheaten Ameraucanas coming tomorrow (supposed to be today and they didn't show up). I'm debating whether I'm even going to hatch them and the Plymouth Rocks. Maybe I'm just worn out after being in the sun too long :-D
I wish you had too!!

DId you notice the tiny one? You know you want to adopt it LOL I'm thinking someone needs too so it will have a better chance to make it, Right? :)

I volunteer! Seriously tho, I might be interested in one or two just let me know how much. Might be a good father's day gift for my hubby he really wants pigs.

Morning all! Today is my Friday, I am so looking forward to tomorrow and being home with my kids and the feather babies. Had 2 more hatch out over night, hopefully the hatch will be done by tomorrow I want to clean the hatcher and get it ready for the guinea eggs we plan on moving Sunday. Not sure how good of a hatch they will give us since my guineas haven't been to good about hatching. But we will give it a go anyhow. The guinea hen sitting her nest is one serious momma. I wanted to take her eggs and put them in the incubator when hubby found them but he insisted on letting her keep them. I went to check her last night and she is still sitting 22 eggs (from the looks of it) she wouldn't get off the nest anymore than I made her. She just kept twirling around and hissing at me. Hopefully she will have better luck hatching those little darlings than we are having in the house, lol.

Nana, that is a sweet memory of your mother. Sorry about your hen, sounds like Kurt's roo he lost it was all tucked in looked like he just went to sleep and passed away.

Mitzi, I can see you with one of those piggies! I am sure it would fit right in with all your feather babies. Love those little BO chicks! I love, love, love my little buff orphingtons. I have 4 in my laying pen and we have a grow out pen with 14 in it right now. Sadly I think they are mostly roos and will have to go to auction or freezer camp one. I need to figure out what I want to do with them soon hubby says we need the pen space.

Well off to finish this day so I can get home to all the things that need doing there. Garden needs weeding and I need to replace a few tomatoe plants I lost they just didn't transplant well. Can't have empty space in the garden. Plus I still need to get some more peppers in the ground and get my okra planted. The kids like okra burgers besides fried okra and pickled okra so we need to put in LOTS of okra.

Morning all, hips hurting bad this morning, I did get the kids off to school, took a short nap waiting on meds to kick in, Elwood those piggies are so cute, you can give them milk replacer in a pan and start them on feed in the second week, you could wean them then but it is best to let momma feed them and then at about 6 weeks you can wean them, you should set up a little creeper area where momma cant get to their feed and they will start eating on their own , pigs are naturally curious and they train real easy, just keep talking to them and handling them and they will be tame, on a side note the Potbelly pig if very tasty!!! You can butcher them when ever you wish depending on how much meat you are interested in!! Have a great day all, I have to deliver some eggs, Lynn

Does anyone know of some Coronation Sussex eggs or chicks for sale in Oklahoma? My MIL is still so bummed about not winning that roo at Newcastle. I would love to get her some for Mother's Day. She has been checking CraigsList daily and not finding anything. She really liked that bird LOL.
Check with Joe Villamill. All my Sussex are broody right now. Joe has some lovely, lovely birds. Also, Allbreeds has a gorgeous breeding pair... I think it was Allbreeds who bought them at the Coweta sale last month.

Ima okie my want to check with Michael D he can find anything you need. Sorry about the loss of your neighbor.
Is Michael D, michaeldaugherty? I am still trying to find some Jersey Giants. That is all my 13 yr old wants for his birthday. Chickens have really brought him out of his autism shell (pardon the pun). OkCarla hasn't listed any ads in craigslist that I know of, but I have been looking.
I am running out of time to find some! Please pass my name on to someone you think might be able to help. Message me!
Thanks oodles and gobs!
