***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Maybe you guys could help. Tried posting in the emergencies section but have gotten no answers. I have a 4 week old BC Maran Roo that is sick. He is all fluffed out, wings are bare at the very top and his poop is solid. I am thinking dehydration but not sure whats up with the feathers. Any thoughts would be appreciated, I have him on save a chick and isolated

It can be your best friend in keeping everything healthy.. But they must be exposed at some point to develop an imune system..

Theys probable lots of folks on this here BYC that have absolutly no use or like for me as I look at chickens in a differant light than most on here. BUT one thing I have learned thru the years hanging out with the chicken folk I have hung out with is it is survivale of the fittest, anything less is problems. Way to many people that dont know anything about chickens and meds go to pumping meds down their chickens at every sign of problems. LESS meds and MORE culling. Allow only the healthy birds to live and reproduce, anything less is problems. It is harsh I know, but in the end it is far better for the chicken world.
Guy,
I for one will never disagree with the logic there. I like birds that can take care of themselves, fend for themselves if needed, and in general survive what ever mother nature throws at them. I cull very hard, harshly at times, and sick or weak birds are at the top of the list, they are generally un-productive and useless. If they manage to survive and reproduce the resulting offspring are even worse. Too much work for me.

I understand somewhat. And it's not like I "shove medicine down their throats" not knowing what I'm doing, that is so not me. That's why I go to vets. People have birds for different reasons and I don't think anyone should put someone down for treating a curable problem (like the impacted crop my pullet had) any more than someone else should put another down for killing the bird instead of finding out what's wrong.
That said-some people put their dogs down for parvo or GDV (where their stomach twists) or if they're limping from hip dysplasia. Some spay and neuter, some don't, some let their dogs run loose, some don't. It doesn't make one person right and another wrong. We can't begin to know details so we can't judge.
Does that make sense?
Meant to add-I wouldn't put my dog down for Parvo either. And I wouldn't put my chicken down for diarrhea :) And we don't KNOW what's wrong with them unless we go to a vet.
