Great pictures Wayne
Marigolds do not stop squash bugs and Spider mites love Mrigolds and tomatoes.

Had a neat experience today. Our pair of wild Canadian geese that have come to the house for the past 12 years had a family reunion . Lucy and Goosey brought 22 other birds around the property today...the ponds for swimming, the rye fields for greens and brought the gang to the feed trough.
There was no feed and Goosey did some honking. I took two cans out and the flock barely moved. I was able to pour up the scratch, tap the can on the tire and Goosey moved in waving his head and talking to me. Pretty soon the flock was settled in for the buffet. They took turns eatting...the tire is in the right side of the picture.

Then after resting and displaying for each other, they calmly walked single file to the crawdad pond for a snack and a drink.
That is cool Nana.

been a bit cool for okra it like heat mine are really just starting to get taller with the warmer weather you should notice a good change the next week. good luck mam

I have not read anything about marigolds and squash bugs, however tansy is supose to work, I ordered the seed this year but it was backordered and I still have not recieved it so I don't know if it works or not. Letting your radish go to seed is supose to work on cuke beetles, I am experimenting w/ that right now.

The squash bugs are evil this year! I also planted permethium and wormwood, but neither came up.

Oh and another flower I read about I think was for cukes was the old fashioned pink VINING petunias.
Petunias draw aphids like marigolds do. butt with less smelly. marigolds always make me sneeze. They suggest planting carrots below your maters and peppers. They have a bit of scent but draw in the lady bugs. Found a whole nest of baby ones in my garden this year when i was planting. They are so cute. As for the squash bugs i have had to result to 7 dust. they just wont budge with out it.

I am fed up with squash bigs. To the point that I keep going out to the garden with a jar containing cottonballs soaked with alcohol. I get all the bugs I can find and put them in the jar to kill them. Going to go out today with some alcohol in a spray bottle and spray the eggs. Hopefully the alcohol will dry them out enough. I removed tons of eggs the other day but it was taking to much time.

have you tried insecticidal soap?

Morning all, looks to be a beautiful day out there. Had 3 keets running around in the hatcher this morning with one more not to far from hatch and a few more I pray will make it. How long do guinea hatches last? Of course I guess some of these could be days behind the others since the wild guinea girl was sitting on them in her nest right? How long do I leave the ones in there that are up and running (and I do mean RUNNING, those buggers are fast!). They are rolling the eggs around that are still pipping, lol. They are in my LG so I could get in there and get them pretty fast if I need to take them out and put them in a brooder.

I candled the eggs that go in the hatcher on Friday last night. Took out two clear ones but the rest of the tray had lots of little chicks. While I don't "need"" more chicks I can't wait to see what our hatch rate is this time. The last one wasn't great since most of the Golden Salmons didn't hatch for some reason and one of the ones that did hatch we had to cull it never could walk. If I didn't count those it was a great hatch so hopefully it was just a fluke. Also got some garden work done, I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting any peas even though I had tons come up. It is bugs!!! Lots of tiny little green bugs all over the stems. So I will pull all of them up this weekend and feed them to the chickens. Hopefully the tomatos and peppers fair better. I need hubby to mix up some spray for those. Dad always used tobacco juice, ceyanne pepper juice, garlic and a tiny bit of dawn dish soap(to make it stick to the plants better) to spray the plants down to help with bugs. We used it last year but with the heat we didn't get much from the garden.

Anyone need any male chicks? I have 3 sexlink male chicks free to anyone that wants them. We had planned on raising them up for meat but I don't have time right now for any extras with fireworks season coming up quickly. Plus my mother is having surger on the 31st so I will be in and out at home so much that any thing I can do to make just that much less work for dh and the kids between now and June 15th the better.
